Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro announced this Tuesday, April 14, the layoff of at least 1,000 employees as part of the company’s ongoing restructuring process.

According to the executive, the areas most affected this time are marketing and branding, globally, as part of the adaptation to the changing entertainment industry.

The adjustment represents approximately 1 % of Disney’s total workforce, which currently has 231,000 employees.

A Brazilian congressional committee recommended that local authorities file charges against Binance CEO Changpeng “CZ” and three other Binance executives following an investigation into financial pyramid schemes in Brazil.

On October 10, the committee released a 500-page final report in which it accused Zhao and local Binance executives Daniel Mangabeira, Guilherme Haddad Nazar and Thiago Carvalho of fraudulent management practices, operating without sufficient authorization and offering securities trading services without authorization.

In the report, the committee, led by MP Ricardo Silva, stated that Binance, Zhao and others “established an opaque network of legal entities, all controlled directly or indirectly by Zhao, with no defined commercial purpose and no purpose other than to evade the compliance with the law.”

The report also recommended the indictment of 45 other people, citing “strong evidence” of their alleged involvement in criminal schemes, and the names mentioned are linked to multiple cryptocurrency companies, including the 123milhas travel company, the “18K Ronaldinho” crypto scheme and others.

Silva wrote that since Binance was being accused of failing to comply with regulations in numerous jurisdictions, in Brazil, Binance’s operations were “surrounded by suspicion.”

The committee recommended that the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office launch an investigation into all of Binance’s operations in Brazil, with a specific focus on tax evasion, money laundering, and the financing of organized crime and terrorism.

Additionally, the committee recommended that the Brazilian Securities and Exchange Commission (CVM) launch an investigation into the sale of Binance derivative products.

The committee stated that despite being told to cease trading derivative products, Binance continued to offer them, which constituted a “repeated violation” of market regulations. Binance is already being investigated by the CVM for allegedly illegally offering derivative products in the country.

The committee’s recommendations were not legally binding and were suggestions for local authorities. Police and other regulatory bodies would decide whether to proceed with further action.

A federal judge overseeing the civil case between the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the cryptocurrency exchange Binance, Binance.US, and Binance’s CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ), has issued a motion for a protective order to go before a first-instance judge.

In an August 16 filing in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, Judge Amy Berman Jackson stated that she would refer a motion for a protective order against the SEC, filed by Binance.US’s lawyers, to Magistrate Judge Faruqui for resolution. Binance.US’s legal team submitted the motion on August 14, claiming at the time that the order was necessary to shield the company from the SEC’s “fishing expedition” during the presentation of evidence.

Before Jackson’s decision, the former head of the SEC’s Internet Enforcement Office, John Reed Stark, speculated on X that the matter would be referred to a first-instance judge before the commission opposed it legally or publicly. As of this edition’s closing, the SEC had not filed any motion in response to Binance.US’s request.

“While each case is different, in most significant financial investigations and civil actions, the SEC tends to demand excessive information in their requests for documents, testimonies, statements, interrogations, etc.,” Stark asserts.

The crux of the order was that the SEC had requested information from Binance.US related to custody, security, and availability of user assets. The company claimed that the information was not relevant to the SEC’s case, which was filed in June for alleged unregistered securities offerings.

Binance and CZ are facing a lawsuit from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, for which they filed dismissal motions in July. The United States Department of Justice is also reportedly investigating the global exchange for allegedly allowing Russian entities to use its platform.
