According to the BCRP official, who made the statements during the presentation of the March Inflation Report, indicating that “it will register a temporary spike in prices due to fuel rationing and the international impact of the conflict in Iran on oil.”

Velarde anticipates a significant impact from the increase in gas and fuel prices, as well as food prices, “given the high weighting of the food basket in the Peruvian price index.”

The rise in international oil prices directly impacts transportation costs, in addition to “key inputs for food production, such as grains and chicken.”

In this context, the president of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP) “highlighted that Peru maintains the lowest inflation in the region and that the projection for 2027 is 2 %, within the target range.”

Regarding GDP growth, Velarde specified that, although it will be lower than last year’s, it will be above the previous projection, which in December stood at 3 %.

In conclusion, “the BCRP estimates GDP growth of 3.2 % in 2026 and 2027, accompanied by a rebound in private investment of 9.5 % in 2026 and 5 % in 2027.”

Finally, the official addressed the public debt, estimating that it will reach 29.3 % of GDP, with an increase in current spending.

According to Velarde, Peru showed significant progress in this area in 2025, “and currently almost all of its productive sectors operate in this way.”

Velarde emphasized that in Peru, monetary digitization has a different focus than simply replacing the cash that citizens had to carry, instead orienting itself towards “a completely different modernization process, which is currently being applied in almost all productive activities.”

The official estimates that by the end of 2026, the South American country will have made significant progress in implementing “a platform that will be extremely powerful in terms of digital payments, which will have a major impact on the country’s rural areas.”

On the other hand, last month’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased to 0.04 % compared to August. The items that showed the greatest increase were recreation and culture (0.17 %); healthcare, restaurants, and hotels (both at 0.15 %); miscellaneous goods and services (0.13 %); and furniture, household goods, and home improvement (0.05 %).

The National Institute of Statistics (INEI) also revealed in its report that the cumulative variation for the year is 1.15 %. However, inflation in the Latin American country remains within the 1 % to 3 % range set by the Central Bank of Lima.

Regarding the Consumer Price Index for Metropolitan Limait stood at 0.01 % in September and 1.25 % for the year. Year-over-year inflation was 1.36 %.,

Data on inflation by city indicate that “three cities registered rates above 2%, with Ica standing out at 2.28 %, followed by Tumbes at 2.09 % and Piura at 2.03 %.”

Of the 26 cities where the Consumer Price Index is calculated, 15 reported price increases, with the largest increases in Puerto Maldonado (0.38 %), Puno (0.31 %), Arequipa (0.29 %), and Piura (0.26 %).

The BCRP did not release details about this project. However, it is known that the Vietnamese telecommunications company Viettel Group began operations in the nation in 2014.

The partnership between both organizations will allow Peru to advance on the path towards the digitalization of payments to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Likewise, the way is paved for “financial inclusion,” taking into account that the most recent data indicates that “only half of Peruvians had access to formal financial accounts.”

Given this situation, it is noted that “Peru depends largely on cash. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), high costs and insufficient digital infrastructure remain vital impediments.”

The IMF estimates that a CBDC would help eliminate barriers in the digital payments sector. In any case, the country would be forced to establish “some critical considerations, such as offering the digital solution through USSD, since a large part of the population does not own a smartphone,” in addition to “decoupling the CBDC from the banking system, since the people who need it most do not have bank accounts.”

The participation of fintech companies in the local economy is included in the initiative “Interoperability Strategy for Retail Payments” of the governing body, which has presented a report indicating that with this inclusion “digital payments can become widespread within the Peruvian economy.”

The BCRP is working to integrate the fintech Yape and Plin, two digital wallets that are supervised by the bank. Likewise, it is focused on the “Open Payments” model and the design of its own platform.

The objective is to establish “fair and non-discriminatory conditions that can safeguard the ecosystem from potential risks.”

The legal and technical aspects are a fundamental part of this strategy, since they will allow us to develop our own retail payments platform to integrate fintech and bigtech into the local market.

Currently, fintech platforms operate through the Electronic Clearing House (CCE) and their operations require agreements with an entity already participating within the Chamber itself. This situation generates setbacks that could be resolved by joining the digital payment system under the supervision of the BCRP.
