Gold is a safe haven asset that is experiencing an upward trend globally, despite the drop in demand in the jewelry industry due to high prices.

“Experts agree that the precious metal remains a safe haven, especially in times of political or financial instability. The combination of Trump’s escalating trade war, a cautious US Federal Reserve, and uncertain global growth has maintained strong demand for gold from both institutional and retail investors.”

Added to this are the gold reserves held by central banks worldwide to reduce their reliance on the dollar, “a trend that supports the long-term momentum of the gold price.”

Figures from the World Gold Council indicate that central banks around the world “have purchased more than 700 tons of gold in the last 12 months,” clearly demonstrating institutional confidence in the long-term value of the precious metal, particularly in countries like China, India, Turkey, and Russia. This trend is also observed in other nations, such as Poland, Switzerland, and Germany.

According to the analyst firm, gold prices would be “between $2,450 and $2,950 per ounce in 2025, influenced by the continuation of purchases by the main central banks, although in smaller quantities than in 2024, and geopolitical risks in Ukraine and the Middle East.”

The precious metal is known to be used as a safe store of value in times of political and financial uncertainty. Therefore, its value tends to increase “in the face of expectations of lower interest rates, which reduce the opportunity cost of holding this non-yielding asset.”

In 2025, the Chinese government may implement economic stimulus measures, so that together with India it could boost demand for gold. In fact, the Chinese central bank resumed buying gold for its reserves in November after a six-month break.

On the other hand, the uncertainty regarding trade and taxes generated by the return of Donald Trump to the presidency of the United States is a key factor in the increase in the price of gold, according to Steffen Metzger and Stefan Staubach, from the precious metals division of Heraeus.

Gold has risen more than 29 % this year and is on track for its best annual performance since 2010, driven by central bank interest rate cuts and rising geopolitical tensions.

According to Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, economic advisor and director of the IMF Research Department, this would mean disinflation just below that achieved in 2023, of 6.7%.

In the article, published on July 16 by the IMF, Gourinchas also points out that “in some advanced economies, especially the United States, progress on disinflation “has slowed and the risks point to the upside.”

The IMF has noted a balance in risks, although two downside risks in the short term have gained importance.

New inflation challenges

According to the international organization, “the new challenges of disinflation in advanced economies could force central banks, including the Federal Reserve (Fed), to keep borrowing costs elevated for longer.”

This would certainly pose a risk to overall growth, with further upward pressure on the dollar, as well as negative spillovers to emerging and developing economies.

“There is a growing body of empirical evidence, including some of our own, that points to the importance of broad global inflationary shocks – primarily energy and food prices – as drivers of rising inflation and its subsequent decline over a wide range of countries.” range of countries,” the IMF has said.

But it’s not all bad news. The international financial entity has clarified that as the general shocks eased, the inflation rate was reduced without causing a recession.

In any case, they maintain their focus on the increase in energy and food prices, which has reached levels similar to those before the pandemic in many countries, although it is not general inflation.

According to the World Gold Council, purchases of gold by central banks reached 800 tonnes net, an increase of 14% compared to the same period last year.

For 2024, projections indicate that central banks’ gold rush will persist for at least the first half of this year, according to data from Schiffgold.

This phenomenon is explained by two main factors. First, de-dollarization is expected to accelerate in 2024, with powers like China and Russia strategically moving away from the hegemony of the dollar. In Russia, the actions of the Biden administration to isolate Moscow with sanctions, stemming from the conflict in Ukraine, further push Russia’s disinvestment in the US dollar. It is therefore logical that Russia’s gold reserves will continue to grow in 2024.

Second, the Fed’s proclamation of a victory against inflation could further fuel interest in buying gold. The possibility that the Fed will be forced to cut interest rates in 2024, according to Schiffgold, leads central banks to seek easier protection against monetary policies.

In short, lower rates in 2024 reinforce the prospect of rising inflation, leading to a depreciation of the dollar and higher prices for gold and other commodities. Central banks, anticipating downward pressures on the dollar, are gearing up to strengthen their gold reserves, even as the Fed proclaims victory in the battle against inflation.

The question remains: A dollar crisis or a sovereign debt collapse? Central banks are not willing to wait to find out.

Finally, the year 2024 presents more uncertainty, with ongoing conflicts between the powers of the United States and presidential elections that amplify global political instability. Candidates like RFK Jr. and Vivek Ramaswamy advocate anti-system messages about central bank control, adding an element of intrigue to this complex picture.

The European official was optimistic about the creation and circulation of central bank digital currencies, although she noted that the trend is still in its initial stage.

In his opinion, few countries have made progress in creating a CBDC. Georgieva estimates that 60 % of nations are in the exploratory phase.

The IMF president maintains her commitment to CBDCs as an instrument for financial inclusion for unbanked populations, but weighs the fact that they could be the final blow for fiat money.

In her speech, he noted that “CBDCs can coexist with private money, being their safe and low-cost alternative.”

Likewise, he stressed the importance of having the necessary technologies to develop CBDCs, as well as investing in security measures to safeguard user data, in addition to the evaluation of risks related to cryptocurrencies and stablecoins.

The FinTech Festival was the setting for the presentation of the IMF’s CBDC virtual manual, by its director, who also addressed the importance of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in the framework of public sector digital money projects.

In this way, the frequency of these operations to inject liquidity in dollars will once again be weekly instead of daily, as has been the case since the big central banks announced the change in frequency on March 19, coinciding with the Credit bailout. Suisse and the financial turmoil in the United States.

In a statement, the institutions have justified the return to the usual frequency of operations prior to the Credit Suisse rescue due to “the improvements in financing conditions in US dollars and the low demand in recent operations to provide liquidity in dollars”.

Likewise, the central banks assured that they remain ready to readjust the provision of liquidity in US dollars as justified by market conditions.

The swap lines between these central banks are permanent facilities available and serve as an important liquidity support to alleviate tensions in the global financing markets, which helps to mitigate the effects of such tensions on the supply of credit to households and companies. , both nationally and internationally.

However, this law does not apply to other cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin or Ethereum.

The new law defines CBDCs as “a medium of exchange, unit of account, and store of value issued by a digital central bank.” This means that CBDCs will have the same legal status as fiat money in South Dakota and can be used to pay debts, taxes, and other government purposes.

According to proponents of the law, this could help South Dakota become a hub for innovation in the cryptocurrency and fintech sector. Senator Mike Stevens, who introduced the bill, stated that “South Dakota has an opportunity to lead the way in financial technology adoption and cash protection.”

However, some critics point out that the law could be limiting for cryptocurrencies and innovation in the sector. For example, South Dakota joins other US states that have created laws to limit or prohibit the use of cryptocurrency in the past. Additionally, some experts have argued that CBDCs can be used to strengthen government control over money.
