In 2025, Chile’s GDP grew by 2.5 %, with inflation closing at 3.5 %, its lowest level in five years.

According to the Monthly Index of Economic Activity (Imacec), which encompasses 90 % of goods and services and is considered a leading estimate of Chile’s GDP, the figure exceeded market expectations. The central bank attributed this to growth in mining, services, and commerce.

With these figures, the country is projected to avoid a technical recession following the negative figures for the first quarter of 2026, although preliminary results for the second quarter of this year will be released next Tuesday, August 18.

The report details that goods production grew 3.9 % year-on-year, thanks to the performance of the mining sector, particularly copper. Commercial activity saw annual growth of 5.4 %, with notable increases in wholesale sales of machinery and equipment, and sales in specialized clothing stores, grocery stores, and through online retail platforms.

In the services sector, the increase was 1.7 % year-on-year, particularly in the areas of health and education.

According to the executive of the regulatory body, this projection is based on “the simultaneous occurrence of cost shocks that, in line with narrow company margins, leads to assuming a greater transfer to prices than previously estimated.”

Costa also indicated that inflation convergence in Chile will occur at the beginning of 2026. In this sense, “monetary policy will continue to be guided by caution.”

The bank will continue to collect information on the development of the economy in order to evaluate “the opportunity to reduce the monetary policy rate in the coming quarters.”

The president of the Central Bank also referred to economic growth, indicating that a slow recovery of private consumption is expected; at the same time, a decrease in the projection for gross fixed capital formation is estimated for this year.

Finally, Costa referred to a possible growth of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) between 1.5 % and 2.5 % in 2025 and 2026, respectively, due to a greater boost in exports and a lower boost in imports in the face of weak domestic demand.

According to the entity, “cryptocurrencies do not meet the IMF criteria.” Hence the decision not to incorporate bitcoin into its treasury.

The authorities have indicated: “International reserves aim to maintain economic and financial stability in the face of adverse external shocks and the conduct of exchange rate policy. Therefore, they must meet high criteria of security, liquidity and quality, according to the definitions of the IMF to guarantee central banks their immediate availability with a limited impact on the market and efficient access in case they need to be used in periods of crisis.”

The Central Bank of Chile stressed that cryptocurrencies do not have these essential legal characteristics and, in addition, are affected by high volatility.

In the local scenario, “the law establishes narrow criteria for the assets that can be included in the books of the Central Bank of Chile. Specifically, the regulations limit reserve assets to “gold, securities, negotiable instruments, instruments issued or guaranteed by foreign states, central banks or international financial institutions.”

For now, Chile does not contemplate a change of assets to include cryptocurrencies, which represent a high risk for its reserves and to comply with the mandate to guarantee the economic and financial stability of the country.

The bank has made it clear that the evidence does not indicate that the decision to issue a digital currency in the country has already been made. Much less is it a replacement or substitution for traditional Chilean means of payment, particularly cash.

“The Central Bank of Chile continues to consider that there is still not enough information to make a definitive decision regarding its issuance,” according to the report.

With these tests, Chile seeks to follow in the footsteps of other central banks in the international environment, added to the increasingly marked digitalization of payments, as a sign of technological evolution.

The Central Bank of Chile is betting with the measure to achieve greater benefits related to or derived from the digital economy.

However, according to data provided by the Central Bank recently, during the second quarter of the year the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) showed a slight growth of 1 %.

Seasonal data shows the activation of commercial activity and key sectors in Chile such as mining. One of the main factors that has driven this growth dynamic was the increase in domestic demand between the months of March and June of this year.

According to the reports, domestic demand was 31.7 % year-on-year and 1.6 % compared to the first quarter, “mainly due to household consumption, driven by economic support measures and the withdrawal of pension funds.”

Additionally, mining showed a year-on-year growth of 2.8 % and copper activity showed positive signs supported by the opening of a new processing plant and better laws that regulate the activity.

Regarding the GDP growth projections for this year, in June the Central Bank of Chile indicated that they could be between 8.5 and 9.5 %, an estimate that coincides with that estimated by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), located at 8 %.

The board of the Central Bank of Chile unanimously decided to maintain interest rates at the level of 0.5 % and to adapt a new credit assistance program of up to 10 billion dollars, through the financing line conditioned to the increase of placements.

In its last monetary policy meeting, the institution highlighted the gradual economic recovery of the Andean country, highlighting the dynamics of trade, in contrast to the “lag” of the services sector.

In this context, he indicated that it will maintain the level of 0.5 % for practically the next two years, in line with a “highly expansionary” monetary policy.

Regarding the facility for financing conditional on the increase in loans, the board of the Central Bank has agreed to open a third stage that contemplates an amount of 10 billion dollars and a term of six months.

The council understands that this new stage of the facility responds to the financial needs of the companies, complementing the recently approved Fogape-Reactiva program, especially in its refinancing line. Likewise, the agency will maintain the reinvestment policy of the bank bond stock program announced in December.
