Nevertheless, crypto adoption continues to increase in Latin America and Central America, while regulations are tightening in Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Recent reports indicate that some 270 cryptocurrency companies have applied to operate in El Salvador. This has been confirmed by Juan Carlos Reyes, president of the National Digital Assets Commission.

On the other hand, in Venezuela, which is undergoing political and economic change following the US intervention in January, a new boost in cryptocurrency mining is expected thanks to new OFAC licenses in the energy sector and Donald Trump’s decision to ease sanctions on the national electricity system.

Colombia, meanwhile, is finalizing the details of a cryptocurrency law, although without the participation of the industrial sector. At the same time, the banking sector is analyzing issues such as tokenization and digital assets.

Argentina is moving towards openness, with cryptocurrency adoption around 20 % and Jair Milei’s government authorizing traditional banks to offer digital asset services to their clients.

Stricter regulations and prevention of cryptocurrency crime

In Europe, Spain has tightened regulations. In this regard, the Spanish Tax Agency is now holding a public consultation on the new tax forms (042, 172, 175) for declaring cryptocurrencies, in order to comply with the regional regulation DAC8, from January of this year. The measure strengthens control over balances and transactions, as well as requiring platforms to automatically report them.

(Reference image source: Kanchanara on Unsplash)

In Australia, on the other hand, crypto adoption is among the highest, at 23 % of the total. And although trading is entirely legal, in 2025 the Australian Senate passed the Companies Amendment Bill (Digital Asset Framework), which requires exchanges to hold a financial services license to protect users. Furthermore, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) levies taxes on capital gains.

Asia maintains a strong stance in favor of strict regulatory compliance in countries such as China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Uzbekistan, and even Russia. Throughout the region, anti-money laundering regulations are rigorous, and penalties for violating domestic laws are severe.

The Central American nation, governed by Nayib Bukele, is projected to have achieved this strong economic growth thanks to accelerated GDP growth driven by a boom in domestic and foreign investment.

El Salvador, International Monetary Fund, Nayib Bukele, is said to have experienced this strong economic growth thanks to accelerating GDP growth fueled by a boom in domestic and foreign investment. President Bukele “had managed to transform this economy into one of the safest places in the Americas. Now, after several years of mediocre economic growth, given the country’s level of development (middle-income economies typically grow at high rates), activity is beginning to take off with a force that has surprised even the International Monetary Fund (IMF).”

The organization has expressed surprise at this growth, noting: “The economy is expanding at a faster pace than anticipated, thanks to increased confidence, record remittances, and robust investment.”

In this regard, it is important to highlight the impact of the investment that is expanding rapidly thanks to the stability prevailing in the country, “the legal and civil security that the country has achieved in recent years.”

The international organization presented the data last Tuesday through the OECD Economic Surveys: Costa Rica 2025 report, which shows an improvement compared to its last projection in December 2024, “when it placed it at 3.5%, although it is lower than the 4% growth that the Central Bank proposed in January of this year.”

According to OECD estimates, Costa Rica’s economy will experience growth of 3.8 % in 2025 and 2026. In January of this year, the Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR) projected economic growth for that period at 4 %.

At the presentation of the OECD report, Secretary-General Mathias Cormann noted that “Costa Rica must address the skills mismatch, increase women’s participation in the labor market, and reduce informality to boost medium-term growth.”

He also highlighted that the country has a well-trained workforce, as well as “significant untapped potential in wind, solar, and geothermal energy, which could meet this growing demand through the diversification and expansion of renewable energy production.”

The IDB published this Monday that “the percentage of adults in this region who own mobile money accounts has doubled, going from 4 % to 8 % between 2017 and 2021.”

According to the agency, the use of digital platforms facilitates savings, provides users with security and speed, in addition to reducing costs associated with domestic payments and international remittances.

Despite this increase in the use of digital channels, the IDB points out that the region still “must close gaps with other parts of the world both in the adoption of digital financial tools and in financial inclusion policies.”

Tomás Bermúdez, general manager of the IDB for the region of Central America, Mexico, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Haiti, cited in the report, highlights the need to promote policies that allow greater “availability and access to financial services such as credit, savings, payment of services.”

Digital payments constitute a key factor in electronic commerce in Latin America and the Caribbean. “In 2020, the value of transactions of this type exceeded 38 billion US dollars in the region and is expected to exceed 100 billion in 2025.”

Undoubtedly, the rapprochement between the Central American country and the technological giant could make it the technological center of the region.

The information published this Tuesday in the different local and international media indicates that “Google plans to establish an office and offer Google Distributed Cloud (GDC) services to help the country digitally transform, modernize government services and improve health care and education.”

Against all odds or bets from the rest of the world, Bukele has positioned the nation as one of the strongest in the entire continent. Without the openness that you have shown towards the use and development of technologies and, of course, cryptocurrencies, a partnership with Google would not have been possible.

Among the priority areas that the alliance between the government of El Salvador and Google will address is digital government, which includes “securely digitizing government processes and projects, including electronic invoicing, permits, and other initiatives.”

Also, the education sectors, medical attention to the population with the incorporation of artificial intelligence from “Google Cloud to help doctors with access to information in real time to improve the experience and health of people, including entire communities” in the country.

El Salvador is ready to take the crucial step on the technological stage, and now it has the support of Google.

The pilot plan seeks to invite “interested sectors, professionals and the public to provide their comments and ideas on this innovative initiative.
