At the end of the fifth edition of the Business Council Alliance for Ibero-America Congress (Ceapi in Spanish), held in the Dominican Republic from June 1st to 2, Ibero-American businessmen have committed to building a more sustainable, entrepreneurial and connected region.

During the meeting, the 300 business leaders who participated in the event addressed the role of the Ibero-American region in the new world economy and the current context. Among the participants in the meeting were the executive president of Inicia, Felipe Vicini; the president of the Gilinski Group, Jaime Gilinski, or the Ibero-American secretary general, Andrés Allamand and the president of the Dominican Republic Luis Abinader as host.

The reunion made it possible to analyze the potential of the region as a future center “of renewable energies or the general role of the region in the current scenario of uncertainty”. Andrés Allamand highlighted “the importance of preparing for the future, first by creating a pro-growth environment and, subsequently, by improving governance and guaranteeing social peace.”

Ito Bisonó, Dominican Minister of Industry and Commerce, emphasized the importance of Ceapi as a mechanism for “exchange between businessmen and institutions for the social, economic and financial stability of the region, as well as the role of the Dominican Republic as a lever of growth for Ibero-America in the coming decades

Business challenges for Ibero-America

The businessmen and senior executives who participated in the meeting prepared a document where they recorded the objectives and challenges of the business sector over the next few years, reflecting the commitment to the future of Ibero-America.

Among the aspects formalized in the document, the following stand out:

• The need to maintain a united Ibero-America
• Direct the region towards a “sustained and sustainable growth and focused on innovation, digitization and entrepreneurship.
• Maintain and deepen public-private cooperation in key sectors of the economy
• Recognize the social responsibility of companies in a scenario of increased poverty and inequality.

The Business Council Alianza por Iberoamérica (CEAPI) and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to “strengthen the Ibero-American business space through tourism and give renewed impetus to the integration of the private sector in both organizations through promoting their respective activities”.

On the occasion of World Tourism Day, which is commemorated every September 27, and with the purpose of raising awareness in the Ibero-American community about the economic, social, cultural and political value of tourism, CEAPI and the UNWTO present a reinforced collaboration with which they hope to contribute to the development of this sector, one of the main growth factors in the region.

The Secretary General of the UNWTO, Zurab Pololikashvili, has indicated that public/private collaboration “is key to strengthening tourism and unfolding all the demonstrated potential of the sector as a catalyst for Ibero-American economies and societies.”

For her part, the president of CEAPI, Nuria Vilanova, has stated that they trust in the “transforming capacity of tourism as a generator of employment and a promoter of sustainable development in Latin America.”

The Memorandum of Understanding signed by Pololikashvili and Vilanova ensures the cooperation of both entities in promoting the values ​​for establishing sustainable, inclusive and accessible tourism, as well as for “strengthening public/private partnerships as relevant and agents for positive impact in the tourism sector and related areas.”

Arancha González Laya, Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, highlighted, during her participation in the dinner of the Annual Assembly of Partners 2021 of the Business Council Alliance for Ibero-America (CEAPI), the importance of Latin America for Europe in all areas. Thus, it is “essential” to “pay more attention” to Latin America.

According to González Laya, the region is a “strategic priority” for Spain and that is why the Spanish Government will continue “working for this retios as a common project.” In addition, she defended the trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur, as well as the updating of the agreements with Chile and Mexico as fundamental members for the reactivation of the region.

“If Europe is not in Latin America, others will take its place,” she said during the event that brought together important Spanish and Latin American businessmen, diplomats, representatives of the Administration and Latin American organizations.

The official highlighted that the Latin American economy began its recovery. However, during the pandemic it was possible to show the “existing weaknesses” with the democratic institutional framework and the high rates of informal economy, beyond positive aspects “such as the resilience of the society and the value of companies.”

The minister also emphasized the action that her government has carried out in Latin America “in these times of difficulty and shared hope: vaccination, access to financing for the economic recovery of middle-income countries, trade agreements, and structural transformation, digitization and decarbonization.”

For her part, the president of CEAPI, Núria Vilanova, pointed out that Spain is preparing to experience the economic reactivation and the return of Latin American investment. “We have clear indicators that LA continues to be an attractive environment for Spain and for the world, and a clear example of this is the renewed interest of the US and China in the region; the rebound in raw materials and agro-industrial products, and the new investments that are being made in these countries”
