The head of the Shanghai Information Technology and Economy Committee, Wu Jincheng, explained that the metaverse and smart terminals will drive new business schemes.

According to the Shanghai executive, by 2025 the country plans to develop low-carbon projects and smart terminal industries worth 1.5 trillion yuan, equivalent to 224 billion dollars.

The financial center is planning an industry fund of approximately 10 billion yuan to be devoted exclusively to the development of the metaverse, which will contribute to the creation by 2025 of “10 large companies and 100 micro companies in Shanghai that could launch at least 100 benchmarking products and services.

The metaverse will stimulate transformation

As stated by Wu Jincheng, the metaverse will stimulate transformation and improve the different industries of the country’s real economy. The government is encouraging companies to carry out studies in the areas of “virtual reality and augmented reality”.

Government authorities are also pledging to “protect the citizenry from excessive financial speculation and malicious hype of metaverse-related projects.”

On the other hand, Shanghai is planning to make large investments in factories of “intelligent terminals, including virtual reality (VR) headsets, robots, home devices and smart vehicles” with the aim of contributing to the creation of at least two companies that can earn hundreds of billions of yuan as annual revenue.

The purpose of creating the six consortiums is to contribute to the promotion and development of technologies that eliminate or discard “carbon in the value chain of cement and concrete”.

The expected methodology is that each consortium will be made up of an “emerging company with its respective pioneering technology, in which from 3 to 8 cement companies from GCCA will participate.

The goals set by GCCA officials is to go from having dozens of pilot projects and announcements already underway to having 10 industrial-scale carbon capture plants by 2030, as part of the historic Net Zero Roadmap, announced in October 2021.

Emerging sustainable technologies

The startups were selected from more than 100 that participated in the Open Challenge, hailing from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy and the Netherlands. From now on, these companies, together with global cement companies, will continue “testing, developing and implementing their innovative technologies”.

The company Carbon Upcycling Technologies and Fortera will be in charge of manipulating CO2 to manufacture cement and cement-derived materials with low carbon emissions. While Coomtech is advancing a low-cost drying technology that uses the kinetic energy created by managing turbulent air.

On the other hand, CarbonOro, MOF Technologies and Saipem will delve into the technology on the implementation of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS).

Chile plans to phase out the coal plants, which in 2019 generated 36.7 % of energy and were responsible for 25 % of greenhouse gas emissions. The country’s goal is to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.

The program seeks to improve the regulatory framework of the energy sector through improvements in the regulation of the distribution market, encourage citizen participation in the use of clean energy and promote the participation of more women in the sector.

The initiative will also strengthen the adoption of policies and measures to advance the contribution determined at the national level, to promote sustainable development. Likewise, it will encourage the penetration of large-scale renewables into the energy matrix and advances with the long-term expansion plan.

Also, the action will promote electromobility through the energy efficiency law, with a view to making urban public transport completely electric by 2040. Additionally, the program will contribute to enabling and making viable the incorporation of new renewable energy sources and energy vectors, like green hydrogen.

This is the first operation in a series of policy support, consisting of two separate loans.
