Sony closed the purchase agreement of the video game developer Bungie, which has recently been officially integrated into the family of its console, PlayStation.

Both companies completed this acquisition through their social networks, where they announced this change months after Sony announced its intention to buy Bungie last January. At that time, the Japanese conglomerate reached an agreement to buy this independent publisher for a value of 3,600 million dollars.

The president and CEO of Bungie, Pete Parsons, recalled at that moment that from this company they would continue to develop and edit their titles independently. “Our games will continue to be where our community is, wherever they choose to play.”

From Bungie they acknowledged being “proud” to join the “incredible PlayStation team”. “We are excited about the future of our company and inspired to bring gamers from around the world together to form friendships and make memories.”

Japanese conglomerate Sony has reached an agreement to buy independent video game developer and publisher Bungie for $3.6 billion, according to an official statement.

Bungie was owned by Microsoft between 2000 and 2007, being the creator and developer of the Halo video game saga. Later, the company spun off from Microsoft to operate independently, which led to an agreement with Activision to create the also popular video game Destiny.

Two weeks ago, Microsoft reported that it had reached an agreement with Activision Blizzard to buy the company for $68.7 billion in cash. Microsoft and Sony compete in the video game console market, with the first being the owner of Xbox and the second of PlayStation.

“We will use Sony’s diverse range of technology and entertainment assets to support Bungie’s evolution and ability to create iconic worlds across multiple platforms and media,” said Bungie President and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida.

Sony has not specified whether the transaction will take place in cash or in shares. However, he has indicated that Bungie will continue to operate independently and be governed by its own board of directors, just as it is today. The firm, based in the United States, has a workforce of 900 workers.
