X (Twitter) improved live-streaming with a new service that works “reasonably well”, after updating this outdated feature with Periscope’s code.

X owner Elon Musk confirmed on the platform that live video “now works reasonably well” and that users can make their own broadcasts by clicking the post composer’s camera icon.

Twitter incorporated a large part of the live video capabilities of Periscope, the independent application that it acquired in 2015 and which it decided to close in 2021 due to the decrease in users and the cost of its maintenance.

In May, Musk decided to try the live broadcast, so he shared with his followers a video in which he was seen pixelated and that ended up being known as ‘8-Bit Elon’. It was then explained that the feature was based on the same outdated code as Periscope, and that they were looking at ways to improve the resolution of live video.

YouTube has announced the implementation of YouTube Emotes, a new format that allows users of the platform to comment during live broadcasts with personalized emoticons, beyond the usual ones.

This Google service has announced that YouTube Emotes help “create a sense of community” and that, initially, it will introduce emoticons created for games, although it is developing more varieties.

YouTube currently allows commenting with both text and emoticons, with the particularity that these are the usual models for any other platform. Among them, the face that cries with laughter, the angry face or the face with sunglasses.

However, with this novelty, users will be able to comment with personalized and exclusive YouTube emoticons. To access them, you must press the icon located in the live video chats, just below the personalized emojis of the channel members.

As YouTube has advanced, these emoticons can appear directly in the text field using the autocomplete function if the name of one of them is typed. For example, currently if you type “smile”, the emoticon of a smiley face appears, as YouTube has commented on its Help page.

Finally, he has indicated that the first emoticons integrated into the YouTube Emotes feature have been created by graphic designers Abelle Hayford, Guy Field and Yujin Won.

This attribute guarantees added value, particularly in the job search, by promoting a more dynamic environment for interviews or meetings in the future. The new tool will be deployed to all users of the social network throughout this week.

According to what was expressed by the representatives of the social network, with this new application it is guaranteed “from an initial job search to a 1: 1 conversation. We wanted to boost the productivity of our members from start to finish, while we kept safe. By adding video conferencing as part of the messaging experience, members can virtually connect while maintaining the context of their existing conversation.”

The initiative will have an initial phase of development that will be available for personal video calls, but they plan to expand it to incorporate several members to the meetings. Belgian digital artist Dries Deporteer created an Artificial Intelligence (AI) that uses technologies like facial recognition to determine whether politicians are looking at the phone during parliamentary sessions.

“The Flemish Scrollers” as Deporter’s digital art work is known, is a system that automatically tags legislators in the Parliament of Flanders in Belgium when it detects that they are using the smartphone during a meeting.

How does it work?

To achieve this, it first analyzes through an AI algorithm written in the popular Python programming language, the video of all the sessions that is broadcast live on the YouTube channel of the Parliament of Flanders.

In the event that there are no live broadcasts, previous videos of the channel are analyzed, according to its author through a statement.

The developed tool works automatically, and uses machine learning to detect mobile devices in the videos and facial recognition to identify each politician.

In the images shared on the system, a white box is shown that identifies each official with a degree of probability, and another green box with a percentage analyzes the probability that they have the mobile in their hands.

In case of detecting a politician distracted on the phone, the system automatically shares a capture through Twitter or Instagram, tagging the account of the character in question, along with a message asking him to keep his attention.
