Mexican health authorities announced the authorization of lenacapavir for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) against the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The medication is long-acting and will be administered via subcutaneous injection twice a year.

The drug’s registration was confirmed last week by the Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris), which indicated that an analysis of the available evidence regarding its quality, safety, and efficacy was conducted.

Similar alternatives are already being used in other countries such as Brazil and the United States, as well as in the members of the European Union, “which have this alternative for preventing HIV infection, according to the health organization.”

An alternative to previous medical regimens

Health authorities emphasize that lenacapavir represents “a new option compared to PrEP regimens that require daily doses or more frequent injections, a feature that could facilitate adherence to preventive strategies.”

The alternative was proposed in July of last year by the World Health Organization (WHO), highlighting “its potential for people who have difficulty maintaining daily treatments or face barriers such as stigma or frequent access to health services.” In June of the same year, the drug was authorized by the FDA in the United States.
