The deputy for the district of Richmond, in the county of Yorkshire, managed to quickly garner the endorsement of more than a hundred after the withdrawal of Johnson, who resigned from the race to lead the formation again.

Sunak, who has a favorable profile for the “establishment”, the markets and the “tory” majority, was already one of the main favorites in July to take office as head of Downing Street during the primaries held after the departure of Johnson and who, however, gave Truss the victory.

The British politician, of African parents of Indian descent, worked in the past as an analyst for Goldman Sachs, among other investment funds, and assured on several occasions that his objective is to put an end to the economic crisis in which the country, especially after the government’s announcement of the so-called mini budget.

Since 2015 he has held the seat for the Richmond district, although he worked for the government of former Prime Minister Theresa May until later becoming head of the United Kingdom Treasury during Johnson’s term, who later promoted him to finance minister.

According to this information, Johnson has conveyed his willingness to leave office due to the increased pressure on him in recent days, after which a race for the succession will open between the ‘Tories’ ahead of the party’s conference in October, when the chosen person would replace him as prime minister.

For his part, a Downing Street spokesman confirmed that “the Prime Minister will give a speech to the country today”, without detailing its possible content. Sources quoted by The Guardian point out that the prime minister has already transferred his decision to the president of the 1922 Committee – the parliamentary group of the Conservative Party in the House of Commons –, Graham Brady.

In the early hours of this Thursday, the British Minister for Northern Ireland, Brandon Lewis, and several Secretaries of State resigned, with which there are already more than 50 positions that have left the Executive since Tuesday. The ‘number two’ of the Conservative Party, Caroline Johnson, has also submitted her resignation.

The secretaries of state resigned this Thursday are those of the Treasury, Helen Whately; Security, Damian Hinds; Science, George Freeman; Pensions, Guy Opperman; Technology, Chris Philp; Courts, James Cartlidge; and Education, Michelle Donelan, in a new setback for Johnson.

For his part, Finance Minister Nadhim Zahawi, appointed to the post on Tuesday after Rishi Sunak resigned, has also asked Johnson to resign. “Prime Minister, you know in your heart what is right, and that is to leave now,” he explained.

“My main priority has been and always will be this great country. When I was asked to be chancellor, I did it out of loyalty. Not a man, but loyalty to everything this country has given me,” he explained in a letter published through your account on the social network Twitter.

Thus, he argued that “the challenges facing the United Kingdom, whether it is inflation or (Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s war in Ukraine, will not stop for nothing, and it is vital that the main institutions of the State continue operating through a national crisis.”

“If people have thought badly of me for that decision, they are criticisms that I am willing to accept,” he said, in relation to his appointment, before confirming that on Wednesday he went to Downing Street to ask Johnson to leave office.

“It breaks my heart that he has not listened and is undermining the incredible achievements of this government at the last minute. No one will forget that Brexit got through, that a dangerous anti-Semite was locked out of Downing Street – in apparent reference to the former Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn – or our handling of Covid-19 and our support for Ukraine when it needed it,” he said.

However, Zahawi has emphasized that “the country deserves a government that is not only stable, but also acts with integrity.” According to British media, in addition to Zahawi, the Minister of the Interior, Priti Patel, and the Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps, went to Downing Street on Wednesday to ask Johnson for his resignation.

The UK government announced that it will apply a package of approximately 19,000 million dollars in order to help households meet the costs of living.

Under the effect of the economic reactivation after the confinements and the spike in energy prices due to the war in Ukraine, the United Kingdom registers a record inflation in the last 40 years, of 9 % in April and which should far exceed 10 % at the end of the year.

The opposition sector had long been requesting the government of Boris Johnson to apply a special tax to help families face energy bills.

After rising almost 55 % in April, the legal ceiling for rates is due to rise again in October and the British electricity authority, Ofgem, warned on Tuesday that it would be around 42 %, that is, about 1,000 dollars, more per year per household.

Despite the situation, the prime minister had been opposed to applying this tax, his main reason being the energy giants themselves, since it could undermine investment in renewable energy and the transition to carbon neutrality.

UK authorities already announced an agreement in principle in June, in an attempt by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to delve into the country’s economic relations with third nations after Brexit, although the text has not yet been ratified.

Under the terms of the pact, tariffs would be eliminated on British products such as cars, Scotch whiskey, biscuits and ceramics, which would be cheaper to sell in Australia.

According to McCredie, both parties see the agreement as an opportunity not only to strengthen commercial ties, but to “really encourage (…) investment and mobility between the two countries.”

Johnson met this week in person with US President Joe Biden, who allegedly made it clear that the agreement between the two nations is not a priority.

After the political and economic divorce between the United Kingdom and the European Union, the prime minister bet on negotiating a trade agreement with the United States. Then-President Donald Trump left the door open to that possibility, but nothing happened during his administration.

Joining the T-MEC is, at the moment, one of several options that the UK will seek. There is also the possibility that it will conclude several smaller agreements with the US.

At the same time, he highlighted the flexibility in the requirements to take the entrance tests, so that passengers who are fully vaccinated will not need a PDT to travel to England.

Shapps noted that by the end of October “fully vaccinated eligible passengers and those with an approved vaccine from a select group of non-red countries will be able to replace their day 2 test with a cheaper lateral flow test, reducing the cost of the evidence upon arrival in England.”

If the test is positive, it is mandatory to isolate and carry out the confirmatory PCR, which will not have any additional cost for the passenger “which will be genomically sequenced to help identify new variants.”

On the other hand, it was established that people who are not vaccinated and come from non-red countries will have to present “pre-departure tests, day 2 and day 8 PCR tests. The launch test is still an option to reduce the period of self-isolation.”

As of October 4, England will grant a differentiated treatment to travelers from the United Kingdom who return fully vaccinated and come from 17 countries including Japan and Singapore, due to the success of the pilot carried out in the United States and Europe.

Countries such as Spain, France, Italy and Portugal which are on the amber list will be reclassified and will be considered as low risk countries. While Turkey, Egypt, Maldives and Kenya stand out among the “eight countries that will come out of that list as of September 22”.

She has already led the Ministry of Commerce, playing a key role in negotiations with the European Union after Brexit.

Truss replaces Dominic Raab, who after recent criticism of his role in the Afghanistan crisis will assume the Ministry of Justice, until now in the hands of Robert Buckland. Raab will also serve as deputy prime minister in this new cabinet, which would show that Johnson continues to trust him despite the controversy.

In fact, his formal appointment as ‘number two’ makes official a position that Raab had already been occupying ‘de facto’, as was evident when he assumed the Government on an interim basis while the prime minister remained admitted by Covid-19 in a hospital.

Downing Street has also confirmed other departures such as Gavin Williamson, head of Education, and Robert Jenrick, who will transfer the Housing portfolio to Michael Gove. On the other hand, they retain their positions heavyweights of the current Executive as the Minister of the Interior, Priti Patel, and the Minister of Finance, Rishi Sunak.

Johnson added Frost to his trusted team as a reward for his work in the negotiations with the EU, but many Conservative Party voices, including former Prime Minister Theresa May, spoiled Downing Street for choosing an inexperienced person to advise on national security issues.

With the dialogue with the EU now closed, the ‘premier’ chose to create a post ‘ex profeso’ for Frost, as head of a new International Policy Unit within Downing Street. His tasks will include continuing to analyze relations with the EU to “maximize Brexit opportunities.”

Johnson thanked Frost in a statement for his “herculean” work since July 2019 in the negotiations, which concluded in late December with a last-minute agreement on future relations between the two parties starting on January 1st, 2021.

Frost, for his part, has been “delighted” with his new role and has hoped that the UK can take advantage of the “huge opportunities” that have opened up after the break with the EU. “To increase our wealth and define what we want to be as a country in the world”, he added.

Johnson has appointed Stephen Lovegrove, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Defense since April 2016, as national security adviser. He will join his new position at the end of March, although Lovegrove has already announced his desire to work for the sake of a United Kingdom. “being more present and more committed in the world, prepared to face the upcoming challenges.”

Pence called for the violence in Congress to “end now” after supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the building.

“The violence and destruction that occurs in the Capitol must stop and must end now,” he said on his Twitter account.

In more than 60 lawsuits, President Trump’s legal team attempted to demonstrate massive fraud in several key states, allegedly perpetrated in the massive mail-in ballot resulting from the covid-19 pandemic; but it was not successful, reason why the still tenant of the White House tried to maneuver politically to burn his last cartridge, when preventing the official proclamation of Biden.

Just over a dozen Republican senators contested the election before the bicameral session was called off due to riots inside the Capitol.

The world speaks out and calls for caution in the face of the assault by the protesters

While in Washington a curfew was established from 6:00 pm. local time and the state of Virginia mobilized the National Guard outside the Capitol, representatives and international leaders spoke in amazement, condemning the serious events in the US capital.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas urged supporters of US President Donald Trump to “stop trampling on democracy” after they stormed the US Congress in Washington.

“Trump and his followers should finally accept the decision of the American voters and stop trampling on democracy,” he tweeted, adding that “inflammatory words turn into violent actions”.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson denounced the “shameful scenes” in Washington after the arrival of supporters of President Donald Trump in the US Congress and called for a “peaceful transition” of power with Democrat Joe Biden.

Shameful scenes in the US Congress. The United States is the defender of democracy throughout the world and now the transfer of power is prevented from being done in a peaceful and orderly manner, “he estimated in a tweet.

The High Representative (head of diplomacy) of the EU, Josep Borrell, denounced an unprecedented assault on democracy in the United States, and called for respect for the result of the presidential elections in November.

“In the eyes of the world, American democracy appears to be under siege. It is an unprecedented assault on America’s democracy, its institutions, and the rule of law. This is not America. The results of the November 3 elections must be fully respected, “Borrell said on Twitter.

Complex American day did not manage to affect WS too much at the end

Investors focused more on what was happening in Georgia, where the final makeup of the Senate was defined, than on the riots and events in Washington.

The Dow Jones posted a 1.44% gain and the S&P 500 0.57%.

However, different senior executives and corporate spokesmen condemned what happened, expressed their displeasure and urged to respect the laws and the Constitution.

The focus of investors in Georgia is due to the fact that Democrats won a close race for a seat in the US Senate in that state on Wednesday and had a lead in the second place or position at stake, closing in on the control of the upper house, which, in turn, would further advance President-elect Joe Biden’s political goals when he takes office this month.

Four people are reported dead and several injured on the outskirts of Congress

“A shooting victim was transported from the Capitol,” a person linked to an emergency service told AFP, adding that there were “other wounded” in the area. According to The Washington Post, citing the police, the victim was a white woman wounded in the shoulder, while CNN reported that she was hospitalized in critical condition. His death was confirmed late at night.

Soon after, the police gave a more complete and accurate report: the occupation of the Capitol by supporters agitated by Trump left 4 dead.

At 11:00 p.m., London time and midnight Brussels time, the clock marked the historic moment of the nation’s disconnection from its community neighbors, more than four years after the British voted on June 23, 2016 in favor of Brexit.

The United Kingdom had already officially left the 27 club on January 31, but this Friday, with the entry of 2021, it left the common market and the customs union, to which it was still linked during the transition period that ends decide.

From now on, the European nation becomes a country with control in its hands to negotiate trade agreements with countries outside the community bloc, subject only to its own laws and under the jurisdiction of its courts.
