Venezuelans are turning to cryptocurrencies as a hedge against the devaluation of the bolivar and the difficulty of obtaining dollars. “Venezuela has moved beyond the initial experimentation phase in the world of digital assets to become a market with high adoption rates. However, the country faces a significant paradox: the widespread use of cryptocurrencies and stablecoins has not yet fully integrated with the traditional financial and banking system,” analysts indicate.

In this regard, André Sprone, head of Latin America for the MEXC platform, refers to the current Venezuelan landscape as “a phase of high adoption and low integration.”

According to Sprone, on the one hand, Venezuelans are increasingly using instruments like USDT on a daily basis, but “formal connections between exchanges, local banks, and regulatory frameworks remain limited.”

This gap creates a problem when users want to convert the balance in their crypto wallets within the local commercial system. Although tools such as cards linked to crypto balances exist to facilitate spending, the effectiveness of these products is still limited by the gap between reference exchange rates and payment settlement dynamics.

What Sprone recommends for moving toward true financial maturity is a clear and robust regulatory framework that fosters trust and legal certainty. Furthermore, direct and secure channels between local banks and crypto platforms are needed, along with transparent financial education regarding the risks and rights associated with new digital instruments.
