In addition, two additional Microsoft products, the Edge browser and the Microsoft Advertising advertising system, also benefit from this exemption.

The new EU platform law stipulates that large companies, known as gatekeepers, will be subject to stricter regulatory rules. However, these two specific Microsoft products are excluded from that regulation.

The list of companies identified as “gatekeepers” by the European Commission includes Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet (Google’s parent company), Amazon, ByteDance (TikTok) and Meta (Facebook). These companies are subject to stricter rules.

The complete list includes four social networks (TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn), two messaging systems (WhatsApp and Messenger), three operating systems (Android, iOS and Windows), the Google search engine and the Chrome and Safari browsers.

The Commission announced that it had closed four ongoing investigations into these services.

Both Apple and Microsoft have praised the Commission’s decision. An Apple spokesperson said: “We thank the Commission for agreeing with us that iMessage should not be designated under the Digital Markets Act (DMA).”

For its part, a Microsoft spokesperson said the company will continue to “work with the Commission and the industry at large to ensure that Microsoft’s other designated platforms are fully compliant with the MDL”.

The Digital Markets Law establishes new rules for technology companies, especially those like Meta, Apple or Google, which are considered controllers or gatekeepers of the market, for which they must assume a series of obligations and prohibitions that guarantee fair competition in the digital sector.

To this end, the law provides that digital companies considered gatekeepers have responsibilities such as sharing their data, including links in their services that take users to other competitors in the sector, and making their services interoperable with other applications from rival companies.

Likewise, as detailed by the European Commission, for a company within the digital market to be included in the scope of application of the standard, it must have a turnover of more than 7,500 million euros in annual turnover, a higher market capitalization to 75,000 million euros and, at least, 45 million monthly active users in the European Union.

In other words, according to these parameters, companies such as Apple, Microsoft, Google, Meta, Amazon or ByteDance are considered gatekeepers and must adapt their services in accordance with the DMA restrictions.

The OpenAI ‘chatbot’ was presented as a service trained with a language model capable of processing and generating content to maintain a text conversation, with the ability to link ideas and remember previous conversations.

The company led by Sam Altman continues to roll out improvements and new capabilities to its chatbot, such as the ability to use its new generation GPT-4 language model, which he introduced in March, to all API developers. This new model integrates the ability to solve large problems with precision and offer more useful and secure answers.

Likewise, ChatGPT also expanded by incorporating itself into products and services from other brands, such as the new versions of Bing and Edge, developed by Microsoft, which were presented in February.

Due to this incorporation, the ‘chatbot’ has been experiencing exponential growth in both traffic and users who download its ‘app’ or use it on the web.

However, during this month of June ChatGPT experienced for the first time a decrease in traffic of 9.7 %, as well as 5.7 % fewer unique visitors, as registered by the company specialized in web analysis Similarweb in a statement on his blog.

This traffic drop refers to global desktop and mobile web traffic. On the other hand, in addition to a decrease in the number of unique visitors, there has also been an 8.5 percent drop in the amount of time visitors spend on the website.

Information has been leaked about a total restructuring, to start from scratch, with a more secure system and leaving only what is more efficient to the user.

“According to data from Windows Central, Windows 12 will be a fairly modular version. Its main objective will be to become a system adapted to more devices with different form factors. A new Windows will be rebuilt practically from scratch, adding only what is necessary”, indicates Finanzas Digital.

Specialists from Silicon Valley have indicated that “it is hoped that Windows 12 can be optimized for specific chips.” The requirements to go from Windows 11 to Windows 12 are those that users already know: a 64-bit processor (ARM / x86) at a minimum of 1GHz, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of minimum storage, UEFI with secure boot support, TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module). Also, have a screen of at least 9 inches 1,366 x 768 px, GPU compatible with DirectX 12.”

Unless a different decision is made, the new version of Windows will continue to be free. So all users with a current license for Windows 11 will be able to perform the update.

Advances in the implementation of artificial intelligence have slowed down in recent weeks, particularly in Europe, where proposals for stricter regulations aimed at user protection have emerged.

With regard to Microsoft and its innovations, at the moment it is known that users of the desktop version of Bing do not need to resort to Edge “to access the chatbot”. This could mean a drop in the use of Bing, now that many users can already opt for Bard in Chrome.

However, Microsoft continues with its plans to constantly offer improvements to Internet users. That is why it has launched voice chat, which at the moment is only available in “English, Japanese, French, German and Mandarin”, with the promise of expanding it to other languages soon.

Using the functionality is simple. By clicking on the microphone icon, the chatbot will show the answers to the question raised in the form of text but also by voice message, thanks to the use of TTS (Text To Speech) technology.

This has generated growing interest in Bing and increased pressure on Google, which has traditionally dominated the global online search market.

At recent earnings conferences, Google downplayed the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on its search advertising business, while Microsoft suggested something far more dramatic is afoot.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai expressed optimism that users will continue to value online advertising, even if searches offer a summary generated by a language model instead of Google’s traditional list of links.

However, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella noted that app installs on AI-powered Bing have quadrupled since its launch in February, and that Bing has gained market share in the US during the quarter.

This situation poses a challenge for Google, which will have to adapt to the new market reality and find ways to maintain its dominant position in the online search industry. Meanwhile, Microsoft and OpenAI continue to develop technologies that could radically change the way we search and find information on the internet, potentially having a significant impact on the industry as a whole.

Investors have shown increased interest in Microsoft’s vision, reflected in rising shares, while Alphabet saw its shares rise more moderately.

Now, Microsoft announced that this creator has been integrated into previous versions of the Bing search engine and the Edge browser, where it works together with the chatbot. “Now you can generate written and visual content in one place,” they point out from the company in the official blog.

In the browser preview, this new tool is implemented in the creative mode of the chatbot. “By writing a description of an image, providing additional context such as location or activity, and choosing an art style, Image Creator will generate an image from your own imagination,” they explain from Microsoft.

The company has customized GPT-4 specifically for Bing, with users in the preview over the last five weeks experiencing the improvements over the previous version, GPT-3.5, which powered their chatbot.

Microsoft has stated that as OpenAI updates GPT-4 and future versions, Bing will benefit from those improvements. The company has also incorporated their own updates based on community feedback.

OpenAI has announced that GPT-4 is particularly notable for its creativity and collaboration capabilities. In addition to generating original content, it can also edit and repeat tasks with users, such as composing songs or scripts while learning their style.

Previous models focused on generating text-based content, but GPT-4 can now write a subtitle, perform an analysis or classification based on an image, and handle longer text of over 25,000 words.

Moreover, the reasoning ability of ChatGPT, the chatbot based on GPT-3.5, has also been enhanced by GPT-4, thanks to the use of more human feedback during its training, including that provided by ChatGPT itself. Additionally, GPT-4’s responses are more accurate, as it has worked with experts, applied real-world use cases, and used its advanced reasoning and instruction-following capabilities to refine its training.

The technology company presented the new versions of its Bing search engine and its Edge browser at the beginning of February, when it indicated that from then on they would be based on the ChatGPT chatbot, developed by OpenAI.

The company now commented that the new Bing already has a shortcut in the Windows 11 interface, by being integrated into its taskbar, with a search box in which you can type to get all the results.

This feature is available to Bing preview users, who will need to install the latest search engine update to access it.

Along with this new functionality, Microsoft presented a series of features focused on connectivity with Phone Link, which is already available for iOS and has updated its version for Android in order to strengthen the link between terminals and Windows PCs.

Developed by OpenAI, ChatGPT is a chatbot trained to have a text conversation that is based on the GPT 3.5 language model and has the ability to generate and link ideas, as well as remember conversations.

In the last month, the company has been integrating this technology into its different services, starting with the Azure OpenAI Service in mid-January, later bringing it to its Bing search engine and its Edge browser.

Its latest iteration has materialized in the preview of the new AI-powered Bing on mobile apps and its Edge browser, as well as the search engine version for Skype.

Now, the technology manufacturer announced that it is testing this technology on robots, to “make natural interactions possible” with humans and has explained what it expects from this integration.

“Our goal with this research is to see if ChatGPT can think beyond text and reason about the physical world to help with robotics tasks“, Microsoft said in a statement, adding that it seeks to “help people interact with robots more easily, without the need to learn complex programming languages or details about robotic systems.”

In this sense, the company established as a challenge to teach this chatbot to solve problems taking into account factors such as the context of the operating environment and the way in which “physical actions can change the state of the world.”
