A memorandum of understanding signed this Tuesday, July 14, between Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and Paraguay seeks the creation of the so-called “South American Single Sky”; an initiative for the integration of the regional civil aviation market and greater accessibility of air services among the participating countries.

Transportation authorities from the signatory countries met to advance the “gradual liberalization of air transport in the region, respecting the legal and regulatory frameworks of each state.”

Among the objectives of this agreement, according to the Brazilian Ministry of Ports and Airports, is “expanding the range of flights, progressively reducing regulatory barriers, and facilitating airline access to the markets of participating countries, in order to improve regional connectivity and increase competition.”

The four South American countries will create a working group with a one-year deadline to establish proposals for the gradual implementation of the Single South American Sky project.
