This weekend, Honduras declared a national alert due to an increase in measles cases in neighboring countries, such as Belize and Costa Rica.

This was announced by the Ministry of Health, which will also require the measles vaccine for those wishing to enter the Central American nation.

With this measure, Honduras joins other countries, such as the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Bolivia, where health authorities have increased security measures “due to active measles outbreaks, several linked to infections among those who refuse vaccination.”

In this regard, the Honduran Ministry of Health declared a national measles health alert over the weekend as a preventative measure to strengthen its response to the high risk of suspected and confirmed cases of the disease entering the country.

For its part, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that “the overall risk of measles in the Americas is considered high,” due to low vaccination rates being a key factor in this high-risk assessment.
