Apple would be in the process of developing its own pre-trained generative artificial intelligence model, known internally as “Ajax.” According to a Bloomberg News item on July 19, this system bears similarities to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard.

While there is no indication yet that Apple has plans to release Ajax to the public, its secretive development comes as no surprise given the company’s reputation for keeping its projects confidential.

The name “Ajax” comes from the fact that it was built on top of Google’s machine learning framework, Jax, and appears to run on Google’s cloud. This could pose a challenge for extending Ajax beyond internal testing, as Apple takes a privacy-focused stance and seeks to run AI technologies on embedded processors, rather than relying on cloud services.

Although Google’s Bard system is a direct competitor in the field of consumer-facing generative AI, and Microsoft and OpenAI are also present with BingAI and ChatGPT, Apple has not yet expressed its intention to compete directly in this arena.

Apple’s focus on privacy could lead them to develop a GPT model that works unobtrusively on the iPhone’s hardware. This would be an advantage for users who value privacy and would prefer conversational features without relying on cloud services. In addition, it would solve some of the current problems with GPT-based chatbots, such as hallucinations that affect cryptocurrency trading bots.

If Apple were to develop a pre-trained chatbot capable of querying user-adjusted data and keeping data private on the device, it would be especially beneficial for users who want to keep their financial and personal data safe.

Although Apple is not known for its advancements in the field of chatbots, it is still a major force in the field of AI. His advances in iPhone camera AI and photo editing are notable, and his Apple Research team continues to contribute significant research in the field of machine learning.

Some big names in the AI field have also been linked to Apple’s AI Labs, including Ian Goodfellow, known as the “GANfather,” and John Giannandrea, Apple’s current head of AI, who previously led the Google Search team. Although the company has yet to venture extensively into the realm of chatbots, its influence on AI remains impressive.

Google has been cautious in the past with its AI technology, but Bard’s hasty announcement is a clear indication of the “red alert” triggered at the company following the launch of ChatGPT last year. OpenAI’s decision to make ChatGPT freely available online brought millions to this novel form of automatic text generation.

Despite Google’s extensive experience in AI, the company has been reluctant to share its tools with the public due to the well-documented tendencies of big language models like LaMDA and GPT-3.5 towards toxic content and asserting false information. However, Google is pushing the accelerator with Bard so as not to be left behind in the race for dominance in the chatbot market.
