According to the regulatory body’s report, “the largest increase in prices was recorded in the recreation and culture sector (7.3 %), followed by restaurants and hotels (7.1 %), clothing and footwear (7 %), household goods (6.8 %), education services (6.6 %), and communications (6.5 %).”

In early May, the president of the Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV), Luis Pérez, “anticipated that 2026 would be marked by significant changes, which, he stated, would be felt by the end of the year and very likely in the following years, especially the next two, 2027 and 2028.”

At that time, Pérez predicted that starting in May, inflation would be in the single digits, considering the behavior of prices, which had shown a progressive reduction since the beginning of the year.

Meanwhile, some experts point to the rise in the value of the dollar as one of the main causes of the price increases in the country.

According to the AVB, a new system will be established: validation and collection will be done directly at the teller window of the issuing bank. If the person has an account at the same institution, “the payment can be made via direct deposit at the teller window. If they are not a client of the issuing bank, the institution may choose to pay in cash –depending on the amount–, facilitate the opening of an account, or apply other mechanisms.”

Regarding the availability of funds, it will be immediate if the check is deposited into an account at the same bank. “However, if the transaction involves different institutions, the money will be available the next business day.”

The AVB (Venezuelan Banking Association) reported that this new system may involve the collection of fees, depending on the method used.

The change in check cashing is part of the transition to the era of digital payments. This method has been steadily gaining ground. “According to the Banking Association, 99.9 % of transactions in the country are already carried out through digital channels.” Furthermore, “the removal of checks from the clearinghouse reflects their declining relevance in an environment dominated by electronic transfers and digital payments.”

With data up to the fourth quarter of last year, moderate growth is evident, but it surpasses analysts’ forecasts, thanks to an increase in domestic demand, “with rises in investment and consumption.”

According to the report, the sectors with the greatest contribution were trade, personal services, manufacturing, and business services. Meanwhile, the sectors that showed a decline were mining, electricity supply, gas, water, and waste management.

The Undersecretary of Finance in the current government of President José Antonio Kast, Juan Pablo Rodríguez, indicated that the results published by the Central Bank confirm “an average growth of around 2.1 percent over the last 10 years.”

On the other hand, he emphasized that Chile needs “to return to strong, dynamic, and confident growth to generate more opportunities, better jobs, and greater well-being.” Regarding the biggest challenge for the new administration, the official indicated that it will be achieving annual growth close to 4 %.

During the recent meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (Copom), in the last week of January, it was agreed to maintain rates at 15 %, the highest level in 20 years. The implementation of a cut next month will depend on whether the inflation forecasts hold true.

According to the Copom minutes, there is “a moderation in the pace of economic activity, consistent with the adjustment cycle, and an improvement in the behavior of food, energy, and service prices.”

However, it is noted that “the fiscal trajectory and the international scenario remain risk factors, especially due to recent market volatility and the persistence of high interest rates in advanced economies.”

The Brazilian economic outlook remains uncertain, awaiting developments in the price dynamics. The Copom will evaluate the possibility of easing interest rates at its next meeting, should the appropriate conditions arise.
