The technology company announced that SMS authentication will soon be done by QR codes.

Google’s goal is to advance its cybersecurity policy to protect users from attacks through phishing and SIM swapping. “Currently, SMS are vulnerable to attacks and fraud, which has led the company to adopt more secure methods such as Passkeys and passwordless authentication.”

Regarding the QR codes that will replace SMS, the company said that users will be able to scan them “instead of receiving a six-digit code by text message. This change is part of a global trend to strengthen security in online accounts through methods such as application authenticators and physical security keys.”

Another objective of this change is, according to the company, “to reduce the impact of the rampant and global abuse of SMS”, since through this functionality users can fall into a “phishing scam and the dependence on the telephone service provider to support protection against cyber threats”.

The security provided by these keys made up of numbers, letters and special characters is invaluable, but they are increasingly seen as outdated. In this regard, technology companies have been working for years to offer simpler password managers.

The company FIDO Alliance, which works on the creation of open standards for key authentication, has spoken out on this matter. According to the company, the end of traditional passwords is near. “The organization is working on a tool to exchange unique access keys and other credentials between providers.”

They have pointed out that passwords “can be moved between different online services or password managers without compromising user security thanks to the Passkey Central tool. The idea has convinced industry giants such as Apple, Google or Samsung, who are interested in working with FIDO Alliance to develop this technology.”

Vulnerability of current keys

Cyberattacks do not stop, and digital criminals specialize in new ways to bypass barriers on different platforms. Currently, it is easier for hackers “to access victims’ sensitive information, and traditional passwords are no longer effective in retaining them. Access keys with providers protect users from phishing and facilitate login.”

The idea of FIDO Alliance is to extend the use of access keys instead of passwords to more users so that they have control over their access formulas, in addition to facilitating the change of them. A clear example of how to securely transfer keys between administrators is by using “Passkey Central, where the Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP) and Credential Exchange Format (CXF) are used to securely transfer keys between administrators.” This way, users’ confidential information is never exposed.

The update will change the way users use the application. “Google Chrome will force the use of your face or fingerprint when filling in a password.”

When entering a website on the Internet, it will no longer be enough to use Google’s password manager. Once the change is implemented, when entering a site that requires a password, the data will not be filled in automatically. The page will request the fingerprint or face scan to complete the process.

The user will use the method that is enabled on their device. But in case you do not want to force the authentication method, you can leave it as is from the Google Chrome settings.

Currently, the feature is in testing period in Google Chrome Canary, which is an experimental version that the company regularly tests.

Google expanded the methods that allow user authentication to a company account in a two-factor system by using the Chrome browser when logging in to a computer.

The two-step verification (2VS) or two-factor authentication (2AF) system requires an additional item after the password to confirm that the user is the one who is trying to log into their Google account.

This second factor can be a pop-up window, in which the user must indicate that it is him with the corresponding button, or press a linked security key (external hardware) for several seconds.

The technology company began to distribute another option: that the Chrome browser app for Android acts as a security key from the mobile when trying to log in to a computer, as reported by 9to5Google.

When the user enters their Google account email and password on a computer, they will see a new notification on the phone asking if they are trying to access and notifying them that someone is trying to log in from a nearby device .

From the aforementioned portal they point out that after confirming, a screen appears with a padlock surrounded by a circle with the corporate color that indicates that it is connected to the device, as is the case with the process that follows with a security key physical.
