Elon Musk announced that his social networking company X will be in charge of covering the legal expenses of users who have been harmed by their employers due to their participation or publication of content on the platform.

In a series of posts on X’s account on August 5, Musk revealed this new move, stating that they would back lawsuits of any degree:

“If you’ve been treated unfairly by your employer because of your activity on this platform, whether it’s posting content or just liking, we’ll bear the legal costs. No restrictions. Please let us know.”

The initial response to the post was quite positive, with over 200,000 likes as of this writing, and many people expressing an interest in eventual lawsuits being funded.

As an example, The Labs of TikTok highlighted a case where Kara Lynne, an employee at Limited Run Games, was allegedly fired for following X’s account.

In line with her statements, Musk intervened by asking Lynne directly: “Kara, is this true?” Lynne then clarified: “The situation is more complex than the headline, but yes“.

Musk calls himself a staunch defender of free speech and noted his deep distaste for cancel culture. This last step seems to be in line with his approach to move X away from censoring content, especially when it comes to political and ideological opinions.

In December 2022, Musk tweeted that cancel culture needed to end. Under his leadership, X has reinstated several accounts that had been suspended due to policy violations under the previous administration.
