Last week, the extension of the flight ban to Aruba from Venezuela until August 30 was announced. The measure applies to passenger, cargo, and general aviation flights.

Last May, Aruban Prime Minister Mike Eman had indicated that the Dutch Embassy in Caracas had been operational to process visa applications as a key requirement for reopening the air border with Venezuela. The restriction was planned to last four months.

Regarding the decision to extend the air border closure for another month and a half, aeronautical lawyer Guillermo de Armas clarified that the restriction was “reflected in NOTAM number A0382/25 issued by the Queen Beatrix International Airport in Oranjestad, the island’s capital.”

According to the Aruban Prime Minister, “the measure is due, among other reasons, to the climate of global instability resulting from tensions such as the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, which has led the Kingdom of the Netherlands to act with greater caution.”

Regarding the embassy in Caracas, he emphasized that it is not yet ready, and the global situation remains uncertain.

The president of the Aruba Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Diederik Kemmerling, raised the need to reopen the border with Venezuela with the aim of increasing commercial exchange, in addition to benefiting tourism.

According to the official, the main items that arrive to the island from Venezuela are food and construction materials. Opening the border would boost the economy of both territories by encouraging imports and exports.

In an interview with Crónicas del Caribe, Kemmerling noted: “The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Aruba wants to open the border with Venezuela completely. This is very important for importing and exporting products, because right now the products in the supermarket are very expensive.”

According to data from the Central Statistics Office of Aruba, during the first four months of 2024, Venezuela was ranked fifth among exporters to the island. “In that period, 1,590 tons were imported, compared to 1,381 tons during the first three months of 2023,” said office states.

The government of Aruba announced this Sunday, April 21, the extension of the ban on flights to and from Venezuela for three more months.

In a statement, the aeronautical authorities of the Caribbean island announced the prohibition measure that will be, for the moment, until July 20. The information is published on the Defense Internet Notam Service web.

According to the report from the island’s Tourism Authority, the island “received a total of 141,380 visitors during the first quarter of 2024, of which 83.9 % come from North America, 9.9 % from South America, 4.1 % from Europe and 2.6 % from other countries.”

With this measure, the air border between Aruba and Venezuela remains closed until July 20; although the maritime border was reopened in May 2023.

This Sunday the commercial exchange between Venezuela and Aruba resumed, after a suspension that lasted for four years.

Aboard the boats El Maracucho and La Gaviota, 76 tons of “fruit, vegetables and other merchandise left for this island in the Netherlands in the Caribbean Sea” from the port of Guaranao, in the state of Falcón, “as indicated on Twitter the Vice Minister for Europe, Franklin Ramírez.

As will be recalled, the restrictions on maritime and air traffic “between Venezuela and the islands of the Netherlands in the Caribbean Sea (Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao) have maintained restrictions since February 2019, clouded by political issues. However, in May of this year the borders were opened again to boost trade and diplomatic relations.

The departure of these two vessels, loaded with 76 tons of fruits and vegetables to Aruba, marks the resumption of trade relations between the two territories, auguring the revitalization of their economies.

La entrada Venezuela and Aruba restart commercial exchange apareció primero en Bitfinance.

This Saturday, the Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Yván Gil, confirmed the reopening of the commercial connection with the islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao in April and May.

On his Twitter account, Gil posted the schedule, where he noted that the maritime and air connection with Curaçao will be reopened on April 3; that same date the maritime contact with Bonaire will be opened. And later, on May 1st, they will resume the connection by sea with Curaçao.

Flights to the islands belonging to the Kingdom of the Netherlands were suspended in 2019, due to internal political problems.

The reopening of contact between the islands and Venezuela represents an advance in commercial relations, as well as representing a light for the tourism sector.

As the date indicated by Gil to resume the connection by air and sea approaches, the airlines that will be authorized for these routes will be known.

This Monday a meeting was held in Caracas between the Vice President of Venezuela Delcy Rodríguez and the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Robert Schuddeboom, to review the conditions for the reopening of the maritime border with Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire.

Let us remember that the border with these islands has been closed since 2019. In this sense, Rodríguez spoke through his Twitter account to publicize this meeting with the ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Caracas.

Both representatives discussed issues inherent to the bilateral relationship between the two nations and “the steps to follow for the reopening of the border between Venezuela and Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire.”

From this meeting, favorable agreements are expected for Venezuela, as well as Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao, with the signing of agreements sponsored by the government of the Netherlands.
