Cybersecurity has ceased to be an operating cost and has become the greatest guarantee of trust a bank can offer its clients, Bancamiga explains in an institutional press release.

An index that eliminates the subjectivity of risk

The first pillar of this strategy is the eradication of uncertainty. Bancamiga implemented a unified Cybersecurity Risk Index that evaluates each node of its infrastructure in real time, diagnosing vulnerabilities in operating systems and applications throughout their entire lifecycle. The findings are mitigated automatically and without affecting business continuity, guaranteeing an operating environment that strictly adheres to current regulations. No intuition, no margin for error: only data and immediate responses.

PCI DSS 4.0.1: the world’s most demanding standard, recertified

At the heart of Bancamiga’s regulatory confidence is its recent PCI DSS 4.0.1 recertification. This international validation, the most rigorous in transactional security, independently confirms that the institution’s data governance policies and credit and debit card processing protocols meet the most demanding global standards.

The practical result is straightforward: every purchase, transfer, or payment made through the Bancamiga platform has internationally certified protection, the same used by the world’s most advanced banks.

Artificial Intelligence as the engine of proactive defense

Bancamiga has deployed a unified cybersecurity ecosystem powered by Artificial Intelligence, designed not to react to attacks but to anticipate them. The system continuously monitors the attack surface — both traditional and extended — analyzes complex environments, automates incident management, and coordinates autonomous responses in real time.

This resilient and scalable architecture comprehensively protects the bank’s AI models, microservices, and core infrastructure, from staff workstations to cloud-based operational workloads. When a threat emerges, the system doesn’t wait for instructions: it acts upon detecting the anomaly.

Bancamiga is committed to continuous training, a commitment reinforced by the participation of its management team in the 3rd International Cybersecurity Congress, where the institution’s team updated itself on the latest global trends and threats. This commitment is further solidified by attendance at other international events in the field.

Secure digital banking: A non-negotiable priority

With the sustained expansion of Bancamiga Online and its mobile application, safeguarding user information remains the highest technical and business priority. The institution is deploying new authentication and control tools that secure every layer of its digital platforms. This is further underscored by the fact that it is the only bank with 3Ds Challenge, an additional layer of security that offers 100 % protection for online transactions.

For Bancamiga, this roadmap guarantees a robust, reliable financial environment, prepared for future demands, supported by continuous risk management and a technological infrastructure that no threat can anticipate. At Bancamiga, security is not just a promise. It’s a living architecture that learns, adapts, and protects itself in real time.

About Bancamiga Banco Universal

Bancamiga Banco Universal, C.A. is a Venezuelan financial institution with 19 years of continuous operation and more than 1,221,000 active clients. It operates under the supervision of SUDEBAN and complies with Mastercard’s international compliance standards as the principal licensee in Venezuela.

The commitment — announced by ESET CEO Richard Marko at ESET World 2026 — comes in response to a shift ESET has observed in its own data. Since March 2026, ESET technologies have analyzed nearly 800,000 unique AI skills (modular components that instruct AI agents on how to perform tasks, use tools, access services, and interact with external systems). Approximately 25,000 of these skills were classified as suspicious, and more than 3,000 were blocked for being malicious.

This total represents a 13-fold increase compared to the approximately 60,000 publicly available skills observed earlier this year. According to ESET’s research team, AI skills are part of a rapidly growing layer in the software supply chain, often connecting sensitive systems to external repositories, plugins, datasets, and third-party services.

“Cybersecurity is entering a completely new era,” said Richard Marko, CEO of ESET. “Artificial intelligence is no longer just a defensive tool. It is becoming part of the attack surface itself. Our investment is focused on ensuring that AI strengthens cybersecurity rather than weakening it, and on developing technologies capable of protecting organizations in a world of autonomous AI.”

ESET CEO Richard Marko

The initiative aims to strengthen ESET’s technological independence and European sovereignty in cybersecurity at a time when access to advanced artificial intelligence systems is increasingly concentrated in the hands of a small number of global technology companies. “We believe that the future of cybersecurity cannot depend entirely on models controlled by large technology companies,” added Marko.

“In cybersecurity, sovereignty matters”

Backed by a three-year recruitment plan that will grow ESET’s R&D team to 1,000 dedicated research and engineering professionals, the €40 million investment will focus on three strategic areas:

Independent, security-priority core AI models

A comprehensive, layered AI security architecture

The next-generation AI SOC

“ESET has long been at the forefront of applying AI to cybersecurity,” said Juraj Jánošík, Vice President of Artificial Intelligence at ESET. “What is changing now is the role that AI plays.” AI tools are becoming part of everyday work, autonomous systems are expanding the attack surface, and security teams need faster ways to respond to threats. This investment allows us to work across the spectrum: protecting the use of AI, building AI models for cybersecurity, and incorporating autonomous capabilities into security operations under human supervision.”

Source of this reference image: Adi Goldstein on Unsplash

Standard, security-priority AI models

ESET will accelerate the development of its own security-centric AI models, designed specifically for cybersecurity applications. Unlike general-purpose AI systems trained on broad internet content, ESET’s models will be optimized using cybersecurity telemetry and real-world threat intelligence gathered over ESET’s nearly 35-year history.

The company will continue to expand its existing AI-powered technologies (such as ESET LiveGrid, ESET LiveCortex, and ESET LiveGuard) while exploring emerging AI concepts, including “World Models” capable of understanding behavior, context, and intent within digital environments.

Design, development, and implementation of a comprehensive, layered AI security architecture

As AI becomes more integrated into everyday business operations, ESET is developing a comprehensive, AI-native security architecture designed to protect organizations against emerging AI-driven risks and threats. The investment will include the development of ESET Secure AI Relay, a secure intermediary layer between users, AI agents, business applications, and AI models.

The leading cybersecurity company will also develop network-level safeguards and protections for communication between AI agents. ESET AI Skills Checker (a free tool launched at the RSAC 2026 conference), along with its enhanced versions integrated into ESET products, was specifically designed for this emerging ecosystem of agent-based AI systems.

Building the Next Generation AI SOC

A new generation of AI-powered Security Operations Center (SOC) technologies will be designed to address the increasing scale and complexity of modern detection and response environments. Instead of simply replacing analysts with AI agents, ESET aims to fundamentally rethink how cybersecurity telemetry is processed, correlated, and understood. The company’s vision is to make advanced AI-powered cybersecurity accessible not only to large enterprises but also to small and medium-sized organizations through supervised and highly automated protection technologies.

“Cybersecurity cannot grow simply by adding more alerts, more dashboards, and more complexity,” added Marko. “The industry needs to take another major leap forward. We believe that artificial intelligence should help make world-class cybersecurity simple and accessible to everyone.”

Currently, criminals are accelerating data extraction through advanced machine learning models, turning cybercrime or fraud into a systematic process that no longer depends on chance. Faced with this reality, citizens must evolve from spectators to protected users.

Carlos López, support and training manager at ESET Venezuela, warns that the human factor remains the most critical point. “Of every ten news stories circulating, eight are fake. We must remain vigilant and constantly investigate, as the foundation of every cyberattack is social engineering.”

The value of “corporate gold”

Although technology changes, the attack vector remains: “They seek to manipulate the user into participating in their game,” López points out. Phishing through emails, links, and messages with tempting offers continues to be the primary method for capturing personal data through a single mistaken click.

In the corporate environment, global interconnectedness demands a strategic vision. López emphasizes that the landscape has definitively changed with the post-pandemic virtual acceleration. “Organizations must prioritize cybersecurity when managing payroll, cloud services, and vendors. Once the damage occurs, it is irreversible,” the ESET representative asserted.

Legislative challenges and critical digital prevention measures

“In Venezuela, it is imperative to move towards data protection legislation. If you contract a service, the company must be responsible for the integrity of that information, which represents the company’s most valuable asset. The theft of IT assets not only fuels cybercrime but can also benefit larger-scale criminal organizations.”

To avoid becoming a victim of scams, the recommendation is to always be skeptical and implement technological controls. Protecting devices and using two-factor authentication are fundamental measures, since compromising initial access is always the attacker’s primary objective.

News update / ESET Security Day Caracas 2026

This Thursday, May 28, 2026, at 2:00 pm, at the JW Marriott Hotel, the “ESET Security Day” will take place in Venezuela (Caracas); a series of information security events for the corporate public that ESET carries out throughout Latin America and globally, celebrating 15 years of this specific and valuable international initiative.

The Pope addresses key issues such as human dignity in the digital age, the use of algorithms, labor justice, and employment.

The encyclical Magnifica Humanitas will be presented by Leo XIV at an event in the Vatican on the scheduled date. “The speakers at the presentation will be Cardinals Víctor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, and Michael Czerny, Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.”

The event will also feature the participation of “Christopher Olah, co-founder of Anthropic (USA) and director of research on the interpretability of artificial intelligence, as well as Professors Anna Rowlands, theologian and professor at Durham University in the United Kingdom, and Leocadie Lushombo, professor of Political Theology and Catholic Social Thought at the Jesuit School of Theology at Santa Clara University in California.”

The closing remarks will be delivered by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, followed by an address from Pope Leo XIV.

Since his election, the Pope has made clear his interest in the Church’s position regarding the new “industrial revolution and the advances in artificial intelligence, which pose new challenges for the defense of human dignity, justice, and work.” At that time, he emphasized that the economy is dominated by algorithms, platforms, and automation, questioning the possibility that many jobs will disappear due to AI.

Last Sunday, the Pope urged everyone to “commit to promoting forms of communication that always respect the truth of the human person” in the face of artificial intelligence, in an appeal at the end of the Regina Coeli prayer from the Apostolic Palace.

The use of artificial intelligence and new distribution models are redefining risk for businesses and citizens throughout Latin America. “Infostealers remain a favorite tool of cybercriminals because they allow them to steal large volumes of credentials and sensitive information silently. Although we saw a decrease in the number of detections last year, we also observed an evolution in their sophistication, with better-targeted campaigns and the use of new technologies to optimize attacks,” says David González, Cybersecurity Specialist at ESET Latin America.

Researchers at this company, a global leader in cybersecurity, analyzed the evolution of malware, specifically this type designed to steal sensitive information such as passwords, banking data, and browser history. With the discontinuation of Agent Tesla, other families like Formbook and SnakeStealer have taken the lead in information theft.

This information is of relevant interest to both experts and advanced users, as well as those with basic knowledge who are undergoing preventative education and training.

Local radar alert: the threats setting the trend in our region

According to ESET telemetry, these are the malware families with the greatest impact that users in Latin America should closely monitor:

– Formbook (Win/Formbook). This was the most identified family globally at the end of 2025, accounting for 17.3% of total detections, primarily distributed through phishing campaigns.

– Lumma Stealer (Win/Spy.LummaStealer). Responsible for massive attacks, especially targeting users in Mexico, focused on stealing credentials and data stored in browsers.

– Agent Tesla (MSIL/Spy.AgentTesla). Despite a slowdown in its development, it continues to be widely distributed through malware downloaders such as CloudEyE (GuLoader).

– NGate / PhantomCard (Android/Spy.NGate). A mobile spyware threat primarily targeting the Brazilian banking ecosystem, with the ability to steal contacts and card data.

– Spy.Banker_(JS/Spy.Banker). JavaScript-based Trojans that mainly affect users of financial services and have a global detection rate of approximately 9.5%.

How are these threats distributed to carry out attacks?

The main infection vectors include: Phishing and targeted spam, with malicious attachments that simulate invoices or orders. ClickFix, a social engineering technique that displays fake system errors or prompts users to activate software to make it fully functional or unlock new features in the paid version; in both cases, the goal is to convince the user to execute malicious commands. Malware downloaders, such as CloudEyE (GuLoader), which experienced strong growth during the second half of 2025. Fraudulent websites that impersonate official stores like Google Play to distribute applications.

Digital Survival Guide: What You Need to Know to Protect Your Information Today

Latin America has become a key target for cybercriminals. Don’t ignore these recommendations; they are essential tools to avoid becoming the next victim.

Strengthen your credentials: It is vital to improve the protection of your passwords and use early threat detection methods.

Beware of “ClickFix”: Don’t fall for fake system errors that prompt you to run malicious commands to “activate” software.

Mobile security: Strengthen security in mobile environments and be extremely cautious with payment technologies like NFC, which are increasingly used in financial attacks.

Verify your downloads: Avoid websites that impersonate official stores like Google Play, as they are common vectors for distributing fraudulent applications.

It is used in everyday life to perform tasks in less time that previously could take hours.

Automatic document summarization

When it comes to summarizing materials for an exam, a work meeting, or a child’s homework assignment, AI offers quick summaries. Depending on the needs, apps and other tools such as ChatGPT, Adobe Acrobat with AI, NotebookLM, Resoomer, QuillBot, and Instatext.io, among others, can be used. They even help to research and organize lengthy texts.

Email management

(Reference image source: Le Vu on Unsplash)

It is one of the daily activities, not only in offices but also at home. Various tools allow you to compose and reply to emails in a few simple steps. Scheduling is one of the most appreciated features, as it ensures messages are sent and prevents confusion or forgetfulness. Some innovations include Lavender AI, which analyzes the tone, content, and objective of each message to suggest effective responses. Ellie AI, on the other hand, learns the sender’s writing style to generate responses that are consistent with it.

Automated calendars and appointments

Keeping a calendar can be stressful. But, the difference lies in using innovations like Google Assistant, Alexa, or automation platforms such as IFTTT, which create smart reminders, allow you to automatically add events to your calendar, and also sync appointments.

Automated meeting organization

Although manual note-taking is still common in meetings, recorders like Plaud Note or Mobvoi TicNotes are ideal for handling these tasks, as they record everything that happens in the meeting, transcribe and identify the different participants, create summaries, and answer questions related to what was discussed. AI offers tools that transcribe what’s said in a meeting, “and then generate summaries and key points that you can review faster than a full recording.”

Organizing trips and shopping

Automated travel and shopping planning avoids complications and helps establish the most convenient packages within a given budget. Chatbots like Gemini, ChatGPT, or Copilot are very useful here, having become the best personal travel agents. For shopping, you can use various apps like Mealime and Whisk, or those available in the user’s country, to generate “personalized weekly menus based on your dietary preferences, allergies, nutritional goals, or ingredients available at home.”

It will be a gathering of professionals in these areas, aiming to “integrate the main players in the financial ecosystem to discuss the future of the decentralized economy.”

The organizers have stated that the event is a response to the growing need for “training and networking in an increasingly digitalized global market.”

More than 20 international speakers, regulatory authorities, and private sector leaders will participate, including:

Aarón Olmos, economist and professor at IESA/UNIMET.

Aníbal Garrido, director of the Blockchain Academy at UCAB.

Representatives from trade associations and academia, such as Dr. Jesús Veloz (FCCPV) and Dr. Benito Hamidian (University of Carabobo).

The summit will feature an exhibition area where various brands will present cutting-edge tools and solutions in crypto assets. In addition, technical roundtables will be organized to address topics such as “taxation, applied artificial intelligence, and legal frameworks against money laundering.”

Undoubtedly, it will be an ideal environment for strategic networking and the forging of key strategic alliances between the public and private sectors.

But what began as a well-intentioned way to enhance corporate profile, thought leadership, and marketing also has some unintended consequences. When professionals post about their work, their company, and their role, they expect to reach like-minded professionals, as well as potential clients, allies, and partners. ESET, a leading company in proactive threat detection, warns that malicious actors are also paying attention and that the more information there is, the more opportunities there are to carry out malicious activities that could seriously affect an organization. Once that information is publicly available, it is often used to help create convincing spearphishing or business email compromise (BEC) attacks.

“The first stage of a typical social engineering attack is information gathering. The next is to weaponize that information in a spearphishing attack designed to trick the recipient into unknowingly installing malware on their device. Or, potentially, into sharing their corporate credentials to gain initial access. This could be achieved through an email, a text message, or even a phone call. Alternatively, they could use the information to impersonate a high-level executive or supplier in an email, phone call, or video call requesting an urgent bank transfer,” reveals Martina Lopez, Cybersecurity Researcher at ESET Latin America.

“The first stage of a typical social engineering attack is information gathering.” The main platforms for sharing this type of information are the usual ones. LinkedIn is perhaps the most widely used. It could be described as the world’s largest open database of corporate information: a veritable treasure trove of job titles, roles, responsibilities, and internal relationships. It’s also where recruiters post job openings, which can reveal too many technical details that can then be exploited in spearphishing attacks.

GitHub is perhaps best known in the cybersecurity context as a place where careless developers post hardcoded secrets, IP addresses, and customer data. But they can also share more innocuous information about project names, CI/CD pipeline names, and details about the technology stacks and open-source libraries they use. They can also share corporate email addresses in Git commit configurations.

Then there are the classic end-user-oriented social platforms, such as Instagram and X. This is where employees often share details about their travel plans to conferences and other events, which could be used against them and their organization. Even information on your company’s website could be useful to a potential scammer or hacker. Think about details on technical platforms, suppliers and partners, or important corporate announcements, such as mergers and acquisitions. All of this could serve as a pretext for sophisticated phishing.

The attacks mentioned above typically require a combination of impersonation, urgency, and relevance. Here are some hypothetical examples:

An attacker finds information on LinkedIn about a new employee in the IT department of Company A, including their main duties and responsibilities. They impersonate a key technology vendor and claim an urgent security update is needed, referencing the target’s name, contact information, and job title. The update link is malicious.

A malicious actor finds information about two colleagues on GitHub, including the project they are working on. They impersonate one of them in an email asking the other to review an attached document, which contains malware.

A scammer finds a video of an executive on LinkedIn or a company website. They see on the person’s Instagram feed that they are giving a presentation and will be out of the office. Knowing that the executive may be difficult to contact, they launch a BEC deepfake attack using video or audio to trick a member of the finance team into transferring urgent funds to a new vendor.

ESET describes real-world examples of malicious actors using open-source intelligence (OSINT) techniques in the early stages of attacks. These include:

A business email (BEC) attack that cost Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) $3.6 million: Malicious actors likely reviewed press releases about a newly announced campus to gather details, including the hospital’s construction partner. They then used LinkedIn and/or the company’s website to identify key executives and finance team members at the construction firm involved (JE Dunn). Finally, they impersonated the chief financial officer in an email to CHOA’s finance team requesting that they update their payment information for JE Dunn.

The Russia-based SEABORGIUM and Iranian-aligned TA453 groups use OSINT for reconnaissance before launching spearphishing attacks against pre-selected targets. According to the UK’s NCSC, cybercriminals use social media and professional networking platforms to “research the interests [of their targets] and identify their real-world social or professional contacts.” Once they have established trust and a relationship via email, they send a link to collect the victims’ credentials.

Education: the most powerful preventive weapon

“While the risks of oversharing are real, the solutions are simple. The most powerful weapon is education. Updating security awareness programs is crucial to ensuring that everyone in a company understands the importance of not oversharing on social media. Ask staff to avoid sharing information through unsolicited direct messages, even if they recognize the sender (as their account could have been spoofed), and ensure they are able to detect phishing, BEC, and deepfake attempts,” advises Lopez from ESET Latin America.

” Furthermore, among ESET Latin America’s security recommendations is the need to support this with a strict social media policy, defining clear limits on what can and cannot be shared, and establishing clear boundaries between personal and professional/official accounts. It may also be necessary to review and update corporate websites and accounts to remove any information that could be used as a weapon.

Checking multifactor authentication (MFA) and strong passwords (stored in a password manager) should also be standard practice for all social media accounts, in case professional accounts are compromised to attack colleagues.

Finally, monitor publicly accessible accounts whenever possible to detect any information that could be used for spearphishing and business email marketing (BEC), and conduct red team exercises with employees to test their awareness.

“AI is making it faster and easier than ever for malicious actors to profile their targets, gather OSINT, and then draft convincing emails/messages in perfect natural language. AI-powered deepfakes further increase their options. The takeaway should be that if something is in the public domain, you can expect a cybercriminal to know it too and soon come knocking,” concludes Martina Lopez of ESET.

These predictions stem from an analysis by the Financial Times, “based on estimates from Morgan Stanley,” as “a logical consequence of an industry under increasing pressure to reduce costs and improve profitability.”

According to Morgan Stanley’s forecasts, European banks could reduce their payrolls by 10% over the next five years, representing “approximately 212,000 jobs out of a total of 2.12 million employees.”

The firm bases its predictions on the advance toward digitalization and the subsequent closure of physical branches, as well as the rapid adoption of AI as a tool for gaining efficiency.

The areas where payrolls would be reduced include “the banks’ core services: back office, middle office, risk management, and regulatory compliance,” which involve repetitive processes, “precisely where automation offers the greatest return.”

Morgan Stanley experts point out that this would result in lower structural costs and improved efficiency ratios.

A change in how European banks operate is inevitable due to the incorporation of AI, which will help improve margins and efficiency, “exactly what European banks need to convince investors.”

According to the expert, Venezuela’s position on the international geopolitical agenda also draws the attention of criminals from other countries who operate without borders.

– Venezuela is in the news, so cybercriminals from any other country also come, we call their attention, and since there are no borders in the digital realm, they can launch attacks by fishing in troubled waters. What does that mean? Well, let’s see how Venezuela’s systems are, let’s see what IP addresses are and they start attacking remotely, details Núñez.

Cyberattacks and their methods

One of the most common vectors of cyberattacks in the banking sector, for example, is phishing, a technique that uses identity theft to obtain, steal, confidential information, which Núñez calls “decoy traps.”This method is based on social engineering, defined s the art of tricking people’s cognitive biases into voluntarily giving up data.

Rafael Núñez points out that these cyberattacks use psychological manipulation through emails, text messages, WhatsApp, or Telegram.

“They pose as a friend, an employee, or a trusted person, but they play with emotions (exploiting them); that is, psychological manipulation, using fear, joy, hurry, urgency, and people fall quickly,” he reasons.

The Venezuelan expert warns that criminals have become more sophisticated in their methods, going so far as to block a user’s access to their bank, then calling them and impersonating the institution to ask for passwords or coordinate cards, data that “the bank will never ask for over the phone.”

The rise of ransomware

One of the main concerns currently for digital security in the country is the increase of ransomware cases by 30 % to 40 %. This technical term refers to a malicious computer program that blocks and encrypts a company’s information, then demands a ransom, usually in cryptocurrency, to release it and return things to normal.

The specialist reveals and highlights preventively that this type of “virtual kidnapping” has already affected a large-scale telephone operator and a relevant private banking institution, with attacks that come mostly from Eastern Europe. Something that should undoubtedly prompt caution.

Given this reality, Núñez emphasizes the need for immutable and encrypted backup systems, as well as data segmentation, since “nothing is 100% secure” and current attacks can even be rented, enhanced, and programmed with the support of artificial intelligence.

Legislation and shortage of professionals

Institutionally, Núñez, who is also the director of security and a member of the board of the Venezuelan Chamber of E-commerce (Cavecom), said that legal reforms are being pushed forward.

The current Law against Computer Crimes dates back to 2001, so new regulations are being proposed to regulate artificial intelligence and to classify modern crimes such as bullying, grooming, and cyberbullying.

However, another obstacle is added to the convenient and necessary update of the legal framework: the lack of specialized human capital. Núñez emphasized that in Latin America, there is a shortage of nearly four million information security professionals.

“Many times the bank asks for a CISO (Chief Information Security Officer) and it can’t be found,” he added.

Although there are academic programs at universities located in San Antonio de Los Altos and Maracay, the specialist insists that there is a need for greater impetus and training that generates enough professionals to meet the labor demand in this field.

“I created a portal called másquecampus.com, with some updated and high-quality courses, but more initiatives and opportunities are needed. Personally, we attend, we go to international master’s programs, but there is still a need for more drive, not just in Venezuela, but in Latin America,” concludes expert Rafael Núñez Aponte.
