Google has indicated that “there will be four elements in which you will receive personalized recommendations: books, applications, search results and offers.”

The suggestions are evident both in the application store and in “other applications that may have advertising or different content recommendation systems.”

In the recent update of Google Play appears the “Collections” feature, which has been designed to make it easier to discover content and applications consistent with the user’s local environment and that will allow you to find “region-specific offers and applications, which can be particularly useful if you are exploring a new place or on vacation.”

When you accept permission to access the location, the Google Play Store will display the options: allow access only while using the application, allow it only once, or not allow it at all.

If the user does not want to receive recommendations based on their location, they must deactivate the function in the Google Play settings. To do this, you must go to the profile photo in the upper right corner, select “Settings”, then “General”, and deactivate the “Use device location” option.

Users can now download it from the App Store to interact with it and perform various tasks using natural language.

Copilot, a wizard powered by the latest Microsoft technology, was introduced earlier this year on the Bing search engine. Since then, it has been progressively integrated into other services of the company.

This app recently came to Apple’s app store, the App Store, where it is available for free for iOS and iPadOS devices. Users can leverage their skills to perform activities such as summarizing complex texts, translating multilingual content, writing emails, stories, scripts, creating personalized travel itineraries, and writing and updating resumes.

Microsoft stresses that Copilot is powered by the latest language models developed by OpenAI, such as DALL-E 3 and GPT-4, which offer fast, complex and accurate responses.

It is important to note that the arrival of Copilot on iOS devices occurs a few days after its launch on Android devices, and is now available to all users through the Google app store.

Also known as the Developer Program, individuals and organizations are equipped with everything they need to develop their applications and be able to distribute them in the official store for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV and iMessage.

To join it, these users must formally register for this application development program for Apple platforms and accept its license agreement, in order to comply with the regulations it establishes for its use.

The company has announced the updated conditions of the App Store, which adds new obligations for developers and warns that those who distribute fake or cloned applications could expose themselves to their expulsion from the Apple Developer Program.

“Submitting apps that impersonate other apps or services is considered a violation of the Developer Code of Conduct and may result in removal from the Apple Developer Program,” these new usage guidelines can be read.

Another of the annotations that this update of the App Store introduces is the obligation of these creators to introduce an option that allows users to report any inappropriate advertisement.

Likewise, Apple has insisted that applications that host or contain extensions must include some functionality, such as configuration interfaces or help screens, “where possible.” In addition, Safari extensions must be running on the current version of Safari on the applicable Apple operating system.

The Tim Cook-led company first published its 2022 App Store Transparency Report, showing data collected about how it operates on its app store in the 175 countries and regions where it is available. In addition, as he points out, this data highlights his efforts to “help keep the App Store a safe and trustworthy place”.

Likewise, Apple moved that, in order to create “a great experience for customers and developers”, the company reviews each application to verify that it complies with the application store review guidelines and, in this way, ensure that it maintains “the highest privacy, security and content standards“.

In this sense, the company pointed out that during 2022 the App Store registered a total of 1,783,232 applications available to users. However, it reviewed 6,101,913 applications for applications with possibilities to enter the store, of which it rejected 1,679,694 for not complying with any of the App Store guidelines.

Specifically, 92,598 apps were rejected for not meeting security guidelines, 1,018,415 were denied for lack of performance, 212,464 for design, and 441,972 of the app requests were not accepted for legal reasons. However, after the rejection of these applications, 253,466 were subsequently accepted.

On the other hand, Apple said it removed 186,195 apps during 2022. Among these removed apps, 38,883 were games, 20,045 were utility apps, 16,997 were business, 16,509 were education, 11,757 were entertainment, and 8,317 were food and drink.

Security-focused software and hardware company Sophos has reported that for the past two years it has investigated a series of services that combine financial applications and fake web pages to trap victims and steal their money.

In this time, researchers have found applications, available in both the official Apple and Google stores, that have managed to circumvent their security measures to perpetrate social engineering cyberattacks known as CryptoRom.

CryptoRom, also known as ‘slaughtering pigs’, is an attack method that consists of intercepting victims through dating applications such as Facebook Dating or Tinder, and with which cybercriminals seek to establish a relationship of trust with those affected.

Once interest has been generated in these people, the threat actors request to continue the conversation outside of these platforms and move it to WhatsApp, where they are encouraged to download this application.

First, investigators tracked down a victim living in Switzerland. The cybercriminals managed to trick her by using a fake profile of a woman allegedly from London.

This included images of upscale restaurants, high-end brand stores, and expensive destinations, as well as professional-looking selfies. To give continuity to the profile, publications related to current affairs were shared, such as the death of Queen Elizabeth II of England, and they also began to follow official accounts of different brands.

When they established communication via WhatsApp, the scammers encouraged the victim to invest in cryptocurrency together and sent him a link to the fake app. Once a small amount of money was invested and several profits reported, the victim was informed that the account had been blocked when they wanted to withdraw larger amounts of cryptocurrency.

After access to the account was limited, the user received a message urging him to pay a 20 % commission on the total money invested to access it.

Cyberattacks through fraudulent apps

Sophos has indicated that, in the second instance, another victim went through the same fraudulent method, with the difference that they contacted the hackers through Tinder, and that they lost around $4,000 (about 3,640 euros) as a result of said scam.

Sophos has insisted that both Apple and Google have withdrawn these applications, identified as Ace Pro in the case of the App Store and MBM_BitScan, in this and also in the Play Store, from their official stores after informing them of the results of this investigation.

The technology company has been given the task of removing services from this platform for different reasons. One of them is obsolescence, that is, when these apps do not meet certain requirements to function correctly.

The App Store also kills applications that violate its store policy, as happened with Fortnite, a video game that was withdrawn after it introduced a payment system different from Apple’s.

The company is also removing some apps quietly and by order of some governments, which don’t allow certain services to work in their countries. This is the case of WhatsApp and Signal, which cannot be used in China.

This medium even states that during the first six months of 2021, the Asian country made 34 requests to withdraw 89 applications for violating the law, which Apple accepted as stated in the company’s transparency reports.

This would not be the first modification that the technological manufacturer proposes in its devices and based on the demands of this economic and political association, since it also set December 28, 2024 as a deadline for its mobile devices and tablets to have the USB-C charging port.

Apple’s software and services engineering employees are currently working on integrating third-party apps into their native operating system so that users can download them without using the App Store.

These measures respond to EU legislation, whose objective is to equalize the conditions of external developers and improve the digital life of consumers, given the power exercised in recent years by Apple and Google.

For this reason, these measures would initially and exclusively be aimed at EU countries, with the company’s goal being that the changes are ready as part of an iOS 17 update next year.

Microsoft reached an agreement in January to buy the video game publisher and developer Activision Blizzard for 68.7 billion dollars, with the intention of incorporating the game catalog, which includes franchises such as Call of Duty, Warcraft, Diablo, Overwatch or Candy Crush, to your Game Pass subscription.

This agreement is being reviewed by the corresponding authorities in different countries. In the United Kingdom, the United Kingdom Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) initiated the second phase of the investigation, in which Microsoft has had the opportunity to respond to the decisions adopted at the end of the first phase.

In this response, the American company reflects its intention to “create the next generation of game store”, with the ability to operate between different devices, including mobile phones, and thanks to the content it incorporates from Activision Blizzard.

This publisher currently has a large community of mobile game users, thanks to franchises such as Call of Duty and Candy Crush, whose games can be found in the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.

Microsoft seeks to attract this community of players to a new mobile games store, Xbox Mobile Platform, according to the text presented to the CMA. Its main attraction would be a catalog of popular games, although it recognizes that moving them away from the Google and Apple stores would require “a major change in consumer behavior.”

Bancamiga Mobile Development Leader, Carlos Vizcaya, pointed out that the beginnings of Bancamiga Suite go back about four years, when banks had to have an application to make Interbank Pago Móvil, but that “in our case it evolved as the incorporated new features.

To use it, you must be affiliated with Bancamiga Online Pago Móvil and have the Bancamiga Suite downloaded from the official stores (Play Store or APP Store), indicates a statement from the institution.

Among its most notable advantages are also that “it allows you to view your accounts, observe the movements and limits of your cards and share data with the QR module in an easy and simple way between clients with our App”, adds the information.

Vizcaya said that when the first biometrics is registered in Bancamiga Suite, four other accounts can already be added. He also said that all the updates, available for IOS and Android, are focused on continuing to provide elements of value with the greatest security. Device authorization is now on that path.

The executive president of Bancamiga, Ariel José Martínez, pointed out that with this application the bank reaffirms the importance of technological innovation, by bringing products and services to a click away.

The technology company recently presented its annual fraud analysis and indicated that during 2021 the company was also able to detect and block more than 3.3 million stolen credit cards.

The technology firm recognized that thanks to its App Review program, it was possible to discover and prevent fraudulent applications, thus avoiding damages to users.

The App Review program is defined as a “security system that combines computer automation with human work dedicated to reviewing the applications offered in the App Store and which is a decisive component in the application verification process.”

Evolution of fraudulent methods

During the presentation of the results of the analysis carried out by the company, the existing and increasingly persistent problem of insecurity that is generated by “evil actors” was evidenced, who “seek to take advantage of the existing dependency between consumers and applications to create scams”.

According to company representatives, “bad actors continue to evolve their online fraud methods, often making their schemes more difficult to recognize”. That is why the company continues “refining its processes, creating new ones and designing solutions to face these threats”.

The most common scams are those carried out through gift cards, which are placed as a means of payment by scammers and diverted 148 million dollars during the first three quarters of the year 2021. Followed by dating applications, where users of these pages recorded losses of around 547 million dollars, which is equivalent to an increase of 80 % over the previous year.

According to data published by Fortune Business Insights, “the latest forecasts for the online fraud detection and prevention sector will grow from 30.7 billion dollars in 2022 to 129 billion dollars in 2029. Annual growth will be around 22.8 %”.
