Former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet indicated last week that she is considering running for UN Secretary-General.

In her words, it is urgent that a woman lead the UN, referring to the end of António Guterres’s second term, which expires on December 31, 2026.

Bachelet said: “Perhaps I will be a candidate for Secretary-General,” to applause from attendees at the forum she was participating in in New York, marking the 30th anniversary of the World Conference on Women in Beijing.

Bachelet’s name is frequently mentioned when discussing potential candidates for UN Secretary-General, as is the Mexican Alicia Bárcena, “former Foreign Minister of Mexico, former Secretary-General of ECLAC, and current Secretary of the Environment of her country,” also 73 years old like the Chilean.

Bachelet, a member of the Chilean Socialist Party, is the only woman to have served two terms as president: from 2006 to 2010 and from 2014 to 2018.
