Android 13 maintains the Material You design language introduced with its predecessor, Android 12, which allows you to customize interface elements such as apps, including non-Google apps, to match the color theme of your wallpaper.

Users can set a language for each application individually, which can be different from the one they have assigned for the system, and customize Bedtime mode with a dark theme and wallpaper dimming.

This version of Android also protects information copied to the clipboard from unwanted access, and extends control over app notifications. And in audio, it introduces spatial audio for wireless headphones and the Bluetooth Low Energy Audio standard, which improves synchronization with the sound source.

Other features focus on improving multitasking and workflow synchronization with other devices such as Chromebooks, as stated by the company on its official blog.

Android 12, Google’s mobile operating system in its most recent version, incorporated a new optional function in its settings that allows users to disable connections through 2G data networks.

In the settings menu, users have a new section within the ‘Network and Internet’ and ‘SIM’ section, entitled ‘allow 2G’, with a button that allows you to enable or disable connectivity with these telephone networks launched in 1991.

Android informs that even if 2G connectivity is deactivated, this coverage will always be available for emergency calls.

Agencies say this feature is a “win” because it allows users to better protect themselves against a surveillance technique known as mobile site spoofing, often used by police to pinpoint the location of suspects.

When using 2G networks, an encryption system is used between the tower and the vulnerable device, since an attacker can intercept it in real time. In addition, the towers do not have to be authenticated, which allows their operation to be replicated.

The company communicated through Android Dev Summit that the Android 12L will have new tools that will facilitate its use on large screens and will include improvements in multitasking.

In addition, it adds a new application programming interface (API), a set of tools that allows external developers to create applications compatible with this platform.

With Android 12L, Google seeks to adjust this operating system to the needs of devices with large screens and adapt to these formats, in order to make better use of its space, optimize applications and enhance productivity.

Greater efficiency

According to the search engine, in Android 12L they seek to improve the interface through a new design of the notification system, lock screen or home screen, as well as quick adjustments of devices that exceed 600dp.

The interface presents a notification panel that is divided into two panels (also its lock screen), intended for quick settings (shortcuts to the alarm configuration panel, WiFi, Bluetooth) and another in which the notifications of messages and interactions are displayed.

Also, Android 12L presents a new task bar to more easily manage applications as if it were a computer desktop, as well as a divided screen in which two applications can be opened simultaneously.

Android 12L is already available in its development phase through an emulator, but Google will carry out its official launch in early 2022 taking advantage of the launch of new devices with large screens.

Google is preparing a second update to complete the functions of its Android 12 operating system, which will be released soon, with a 12.1 version that will be aimed at improving the experience on mobile phones with folding screens, with functions such as a taskbar.

The XDA Developers portal had access to a version of Google’s mobile operating system, known as Android 12 sc-v2 and that could reach users as Android 12.1. Among its most outstanding novelties is a task bar at the bottom for devices with larger screens such as tablets.

This, which will not be ready in the first version of Android 12, will be incorporated in version 12.1 thinking of mobile devices with screens similar to tablets when they are deployed, such as the Galaxy Z Fold family of Samsung or Mate X of Huawei.

The Android 12.1 taskbar will feature such as a wave animation for when icons zoom in and out, as well as the option to open split screen mode by dragging an icon to one half of the screen and then another to the middle of the other half of the screen.

The bar will also be hidden when opening the full screen, and it will be shown centered on both sides of the screen when split screen mode is open, like two Google Chrome browser windows.

The Android Accessibility Suite received, in the latest beta of Android 12.0.0, the option to control the device without touching the screen, known as “Camera Switches”, as reported by the XDA Developers portal.

With the accessibility feature, the user can control the device through the camera, performing different facial gestures such as opening the mouth, smiling, raising the eyebrows and looking left, right or up.

It is possible to customize the function to configure that each gesture carries out different controls, such as pause Camera Switches, enable or disable automatic scanning, select, go to the next, long press, scroll forward or back, go to the beginning, back, notifications , configuration or summary.

When the option is working, Android shows a persistent notification, also present in the status bar, with which it informs the user that the camera is being actively used.

The fourth beta focuses on the stability and compatibility of the applications. That is, the platform will no longer change between now and its launch, and developers can verify that their applications run correctly in the new version, as explained by the company on the official blog.

Android 12 will arrive in a few months together with the Pixel 6 family of smartphones. It will debut a new design language, Material You, focused on enhancing customization, with new color palettes, greater dynamism of light when unlocking the screen or redesigned elements such as “widgets” or notifications.

It will also incorporate new features in security and privacy, like the “Closed Folder” for Photos, protected with a password, or the new Privacy Panel and the AI model that improves interactions with its services that shows a timeline when the applications accessed the camera or microphone, and indicators that show when the camera or microphone is in use.

Along with the beta 4 of Android 12, Google also updated the Camera application (v8.3.252), as indicated in 9to5Google, which includes in its code references to Pixel 6 and Samsung’s GN1 camera sensor, the 50 megapixel sensor of the South Korean company with Dual Pixel and Tetracell technologies.

Google introduced with Android 11 the possibility of automatically revoking the permissions of those applications that the user had installed on the smartphone that they did not use. This occurs when you have not opened them for “several months”.

Hibernate mode frees up temporary files to optimize space, as was anticipated in January. This function can be activated within the new Unused Applications section, on the apps info page, in the settings menu, and will be linked to the option to revoke permissions.

Once activated, a corresponding section will appear within the application management, and it will show a list of apps that have not been used for months, as well as the actions linked to it: that the permissions are automatically removed “to protect data”, no notifications to “save battery” and delete temporary files.
