Colombia will resume the sale of electricity to Ecuador to alleviate the crisis in the sector that causes power outages of up to 12 hours a day in the country.

According to the Minister of Mines and Energy of Colombia, Andrés Camacho, and the Ecuadorian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the sale of electricity will resume based on the excellent relations between both nations.

The power outages have been going on for months in Ecuador, affecting the daily lives of people, as well as commerce and industry in general.

Camacho indicated that “considering the current weather conditions, Colombia, in the midst of our energy system recovery process, will provide electricity to Ecuador in support of the current energy crisis in the sister country. We will continue to constantly monitor the system variables to ensure the national energy supply.”

The electricity crisis is the result of the severe drought in the region, in addition to the lack of investment and maintenance of hydroelectric and thermoelectric plants.
