The Fundación Venemergencia, in conjunction with the Instituto Venezolano de los Seguros Sociales (IVSS) and the Dr. Domingo Luciani General Hospital, held the 3rd Academic Conference “Trauma: From the Scene to the Operating Room” in Caracas. Operating Room”; a training space focused on the exchange of knowledge on the prehospital and medical-surgical management of polytrauma patients.

The event was held in the Mega Room of the Telefónica Tower and brought together more than 150 participants, including nurses, paramedics, physicians, and medical students, all involved in the field of healthcare and medical emergencies.

For Andrea Galarraga, Director of Sustainability at the Venemergencia Foundation, this event represents the embodiment of the organization’s academic work. “We continue to join forces to strengthen the link between prehospital and hospital staff, to provide better care for polytrauma patients, an initiative that promotes access to healthcare through education.”

Leadership in critical situations, trauma scene management, communication in prehospital emergencies, and surgical management of multiple trauma patients were some of the presentations given by physicians and paramedics such as Wilbani León, Roberto Cecchini, Dr. Javier Goncalves, Dr. Cristopher Varela, Dr. Adrián León, and Dr. Jaddink Rosales.

Dr. Andrés Simón González-Silén, executive director and founding partner of Venemergencia, highlighted the importance of this partnership. “For healthcare to be truly universal, we need to work together in public-private partnerships that allow us to fulfill the greatest duty of healthcare professionals: serving people and saving lives.”

For his part, Dr. Cristopher Varela, head of the Multiple Trauma Unit at Domingo Luciani Hospital and one of the main promoters of the activity, spoke about the next steps. “We are strengthening the knowledge of all personnel involved in trauma management, from paramedics to specialized surgeons. This joint effort will allow us to develop training programs that cover all levels of care, from the most basic to the most advanced, such as the PoliT Patient Course, which we will be presenting in the coming months.”

With this 3rd Academic Conference, the Venemergencia Foundation reaffirms its commitment to continuing education and promoting partnerships that strengthen the Venezuelan healthcare system, fostering the training of professionals capable of providing timely, humane, and quality care in emergency situations.

In Venezuela, approximately 50,000 people suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrest each year, and 95% of these cases do not survive due to a lack of community preparedness and the absence of available equipment in public spaces. As part of the commemoration of World Heart Day, the Venemergencia Foundation organized 10 training sessions this week to reinforce knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques and the use of automated external defibrillators in communities that already have them, reaching a total of 500 participants. With this initiative, they have strengthened the community’s ability to respond to emergencies and reinforced the organization’s commitment to building a more heart-safe country.

The Fundación Venemergencia launched the  Programa de Desfibrilación de Acceso Público (DAP) in 2024, an initiative that aims to bring emergency care closer to people and transform everyday spaces into heart-safe zones.

Andrea Galarraga, Sustainability Director at Venemergencia, explained that the program “is a key element in creating community medical systems, where people not only have the knowledge to respond, but also the necessary equipment to do so.”

Education and life-saving equipment

The program combines two fundamental pillars: the installation of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in strategic locations and training citizens to act as first responders. Dr. Luis Enrique Velásquez Díaz, founding partner and operations director of Venemergencia, summarizes it clearly: “Education is fundamental in emergency care.”

Since the installation of the first AED in Los Palos Grandes Plaza in Caracas, the Public Access Defibrillation Program (DAP) has shown encouraging results:

• More than 5,000 citizens have been trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques.
• 28 active AEDs are now available in high-traffic locations, including the headquarters of El Sistema, El Teatro Teresa Carreño, and the Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria en Caracas, Universidad de Carabobo, and the Basílica de Chiquinquirá en Maracaibo. Various plazas and public spaces in the municipalities of Chacao, Baruta, El Hatillo, and Libertador, as well as several private companies, are now considered cardiac-safe zones thanks to a portable defibrillator installed by Venemergencia as part of institutional partnerships that embody the company’s mission of improving access to healthcare for Venezuelans.

On the occasion of World Heart Day, the Venemergencia Foundation is promoting a safer, more resilient Venezuela with its Public Access Defibrillation Program, which has already installed 28 automatic defibrillators throughout the country.

“Every second counts in an emergency. Every minute that passes reduces the chance of survival by 7% to 10%,” reminds Dr. Andrés Simón González-Silén, founding partner and executive director of Venemergencia, emphasizing the urgency of having prepared environments.

People at the center

Beyond the innovation of installing public-use medical equipment, the DAP is a community development program that promotes safer, more supportive, and resilient societies, thanks to multi-sectoral partnerships in which citizens are key players. By empowering people to respond to pre-hospital medical emergencies, the DAP is another step in transforming the healthcare system.

The expansion of the program to various cities across the country confirms the Venemergencia Foundation’s commitment to making Venezuela a cardiac-safe nation and paves the way for a future in which every community is capable of saving lives.

With the purpose of providing better access to cardiovascular health, the National Academy of Medicine (ANM) and the Venemergencia Foundation formalized an alliance for the donation of an automatic external defibrillator at the Palace of the Academies, located on Avenida Universidad, in the Cathedral Parish, Caracas.

In terms of first aid and through the Public Access Defibrillation (DAP in Spanish) program that is being promoted, it is possible for any person, even without complex professional training, to act in a timely manner in the event of a medical emergency.

“It is very significant to install this defibrillator in the Palace of the Academies, it is a great achievement of this administration, a historic event, a life-saving measure,” said Dr. Huniádes Urbina, president of the ANM.

Training for the professional practice of paramedics

The institutions will offer training courses for the professional practice of paramedics, which will be endorsed by the National Academy of Medicine to guarantee the standard of quality and excellence in the service of health professionals in the country.

For his part, Andrés Simón González – Silén, executive president of Venemergencia, reiterated the commitment of the foundation “to promote the installation of more defibrillators in Caracas and the country, in order to give citizens the security of being in cardioprotected areas.”

Venemergencia Foundation celebrates its 13th anniversary

The Venemergencia Foundation is a non-profit organization specialized in the creation and implementation of community development programs with the aim of promoting access to health through education.

We are equipping Caracas with Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) and training neighbors with basic life support training. This is useful only to the extent that people commit to receiving training as first responders, to work as a team and to save lives with the corresponding protocol, said Andrea Galarraga, Venemergencia’s sustainability director.

In the framework of the celebration of the thirteenth anniversary of the foundation, Galarraga also stated that thanks to this alliance, progress is being made in promoting cardiovascular health and improving medical care in Venezuela: “being today at the Palace of the Academies is, without a doubt, a milestone for the foundation.”
