The update comes less than a week after the first beta version of Android 16. It is known to bring a lot of new features both in terms of aesthetics and functionality. In this sense, Android 16 Beta 2 includes new camera features such as “hybrid autoexposure, which allows third-party applications to control some aspects of the exposure while the algorithm takes care of the rest; more precise color temperature and tint adjustments when recording videos, allowing content creators to have greater control over the quality of their productions.”

These new features are intended to improve the capture of moving photos to offer greater sharpness, as well as improvements in the UltraHDR mode, “which now supports the capture of images in HEIC and AVIF formats, offering greater quality and dynamic range in photographs.”

In terms of aesthetics, the user will notice “new icons within black circles and a “Settings” section with a darker background.” But the most important thing are three very interesting new functions: first, there is a new widget for the home screen that allows you to change user profiles quickly and easily; second, a new gesture for the power button allows you to open Google Wallet with a double press; and third, “regional preferences now allow you to configure the region, temperature, measurement system, and the first day of the week, making it easier to adapt the system to the preferences of each user.”

Amazon used a secret algorithm to increase the prices of its products and that helped it improve its profits on items in all purchasing categories, thus favoring unfair competition.

This algorithm was used in what was internally known as Project Nessie and allowed the company to obtain more than a billion dollars in revenue, according to a monopoly complaint filed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and to which Wall has had access. Street Journal.

More specifically, Amazon would have used this algorithm to test how much it could increase prices in such a way that competitors would follow this trend and reinforce the power that the company has in e-commerce, monitoring the movements of these other companies.

In this way, by making their products more expensive, competitors also increased their prices and charged customers more. The informants also clarified in this lawsuit that in cases where competitors did not raise the price of their products to Amazon’s level, this algorithm was capable of automatically changing the price to the original.

The company also employed Project Nessie, which is currently deprecated, with the goal of creating a sort of “promotional spiral,” according to Amazon employees. This indicates that once the brand matched the price of a product with the same one marketed by another website -WSJ mentions Target.com-, the other competitors would maintain that value, which limited the profit margin of these others.

Dees from Amazon highlighted that “the FTC’s accusations seriously and wrongly characterize this tool”, in the words of a spokesperson, who insisted to this newspaper that the algorithm “did not work as expected”, which is why it was discarded.

“Project Nessie had a simple purpose: to try to prevent our price matching from producing unusual results where prices became so low as to be unsustainable,” this spokesperson added.

From WSJ they said, for their part, that Project Nessie is one of several cases in which the complaint filed with the FTC maintains that Amazon’s monopoly power had a broad impact on the increase in consumer prices in retail commerce.

The goal is for users to have greater control over what they want or not see” and thus improve their experience within the platform.

This new control feature makes it easy for users to inform the platform, by “just pressing the I don’t want to see this button, by clicking the 3 dots on any post”. The function also allows knowing the interest of the users for a specific author or topic.

Spokespersons for the social network explained that some publications invite the community to express their reactions to the content with the intention of increasing the reach on the platform, but sometimes the type of content “is misleading and frustrating.” The platform will not promote this type of content and encourages “all members of the community to focus on offering reliable, credible and authentic content.”

The new content control feature also allows users to report all posts that violate professional community policies. “The LinkedIn technical team may take action on accused profiles, such as being suspended or removed entirely.”

More news from LinkedIn

The new algorithm of the social network facilitates access to a greater amount of valuable content, interesting and can help users to develop and grow professionally. The platform bets on news and “opinions of public figures that are to the user’s liking, such as opinion leaders, experts in a sector, professors and content creators with relevant information applicable to daily work.”

Another cool feature that LinkedIn is adding, but it’s in testing for the US market, is the ability to decide if you want to remove political content from your feed. If the test is successful, the function will be available in all countries.

“The Flemish Scrollers” as Deporter’s digital art work is known, is a system that automatically tags legislators in the Parliament of Flanders in Belgium when it detects that they are using the smartphone during a meeting.

How does it work?

To achieve this, it first analyzes through an AI algorithm written in the popular Python programming language, the video of all the sessions that is broadcast live on the YouTube channel of the Parliament of Flanders.

In the event that there are no live broadcasts, previous videos of the channel are analyzed, according to its author through a statement.

The developed tool works automatically, and uses machine learning to detect mobile devices in the videos and facial recognition to identify each politician.

In the images shared on the system, a white box is shown that identifies each official with a degree of probability, and another green box with a percentage analyzes the probability that they have the mobile in their hands.

Warning

In case of detecting a politician distracted on the phone, the system automatically shares a capture through Twitter or Instagram, tagging the account of the character in question, along with a message asking him to keep his attention.

In this new stage, the social network seeks to integrate new ways of interacting through videos, which is why it will expose full-screen videos, immersive, entertaining and giving priority to mobile phones, hoping to become a general entertainment app based on videos and algorithms.

For Mosseri, it is important to evolve according to market demands. “Let’s be honest, right now there is very serious competition. TikTok is so big. YouTube is even bigger,” he said. Therefore, it is necessary for Instagram to evolve and become even bigger.

In addition, the network plans to report some of its news, such as showing users some recommendations on topics. In fact, a few days ago they raised the option to show ‘suggested posts’ in the main feed. As well as the possibility of selecting topics that these contents deal with.

According to what was expressed by the director, people use the search tool to “entertain themselves” and the video is a fundamental element in this search. With these changes, Instagram seeks to consolidate its place as one of the most important social networks in a market that does not stop growing in competitiveness.

From the begining, Instagram has been defined a platform that allows users to interact through images. An app focused, first, on photography, then on images and with a growing presence of video has become a very important tool for electronic commerce.

This experimental Android app uses machine learning from the Document AI tool, initially intended for businesses to analyze millions of documents. At the moment, it is available in the United States.

As Christopher Pedregal, one of those responsible for Stack, explains, the application scans a document after taking a photo with the mobile camera, names it and even suggests a category where to save it.

Stack also uses its algorithm to locate information in a document, and it can make backup copies in the Google Drive cloud, as detailed in the Google blog.

Documents are protected with login technology, and the user can introduce an additional layer of biometric authentication.
