Canada will offer airlines a loan program as a solution to the problems they are facing due to high fuel costs, a consequence of the war in the Middle East.

According to the country’s Ministry of Finance on Monday, “the initiative aims to help airlines maintain their operations and preserve jobs.”

The program, which will be launched by the Canadian government, will provide eligible airlines with up to 150 million Canadian dollars (US$107.5 million) in repayable liquidity support.

The conditions stipulate that airlines will be required to limit executive compensation and maintain their operations in Canada.

Venezuela’s state-owned oil company, PDVSA, has reportedly established that fuel payments in foreign currency will be made directly into a U.S. Treasury Department escrow account for shipping companies and airlines operating in the country.

This condition was reportedly set forth in a letter from the Venezuelan oil company dated May 28, “issued by the Ministry of People’s Power for Hydrocarbons – and bearing the PDVSA (Petróleos de Venezuela) letterhead – which includes a notification issued by the U.S. Treasury.”

According to the document, airlines and shipping companies must deposit the corresponding amounts for JET A1, MGO, and IFO 380 fuel into the escrow account. This fuel is used by aviation (JET A1) and shipping companies (MGO and IFO 380).

The ceremonial gala will be held on September 27 in the Maldives, a date that coincides with World Tourism Day, according to Graham Cooke, founder of the World Travel Awards.

The reopening of commercial flights between China and North Korea was announced this Monday, after a long suspension since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

With the participation of the North Korean airline Air Koryo, travelers between Beijing and Pyongyang will once again be able to travel by air to different destinations in both countries.

According to the details provided by the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the operations will be managed according to the guidelines of the authorities of both nations. In this sense, the first commercial flight was supposed to land this Monday in Beijing, but it was suspended at the last minute.

The local North Korean media NK News has reported that “the North Korean state airline has a flight scheduled for this Friday from the Russian city of Vladivostok (east) to Pyongyang, which, if operated, would become the first regular international flight that connect the country with the outside since the beginning of the pandemic”.

With regard to the slots, their return was requested, with the aim of guaranteeing competition conditions through efficient use of the infrastructure of El Dorado Airport (the main one in Colombia, located in Bogotá).

Likewise, the resulting entity will have to return the frequency of the Bogota-Buenos Aires routes, which is “particularly impacted.” The objective is to have the least possible effect on the supply of tickets and to open up the possibility of entry to new competitors.

On the rest of the flight, it is possible to use a paid Wi-Fi network on some airlines (including Iberia or Air Europa) when the plane has already exceeded a certain height, and is off both the takeoff and landing runways.

As indicated by the Commission, since 2008 it reserves certain frequencies for mobile communications on aircraft, a decision on on-board communications that has recently been updated with the widespread deployment of 5G services.

Now the EU announced that all passengers on board flights in the region will be able to both keep their electronic devices turned on and their mobile data activated, in order to use 5G networks.

In this way, passengers will be able to access connectivity “to the maximum of its capacity and characteristics, as with a 5G mobile network on land.”

It should be noted that the European Commission also introduced novelties for road transport, where Wi-Fi with 5 GHz frequency bands can be implemented in cars, buses and other means of transport. This will become effective on June 30, 2023 “at the latest”, according to the institution.

After the recovery of some economic indicators in Venezuela, some international companies started talks with the country’s authorities to resume their commercial activities. In this connection, at least 10 airlines, including Air France, Iberia, Gol, Aerolineas Argentinas and the Colombian Avianca have contacted the National Institute of Civil Aeronautics of Venezuela (INAC) to discuss the possibility of returning to their regular operations in Venezuela.

Humberto Figuera, President of the Venezuelan Airline Association (ALAV) pointed out that the interest of airlines in resuming their activities in the country was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. But with the gradual opening of the airspace, talks with official bodies have been activated.

Figuera recalled that some countries have “legal or diplomatic” impediments to reestablish their routes with Venezuela. “The only countries in which local or Venezuelan airlines cannot operate are Colombia, the Netherlands Antilles and the United States,” he pointed out.

For the lawyer specialized in aeronautical law, Rodolfo Ruiz, he considers the interest of international airlines to return to the Venezuelan market very positive because it is a sign of economic recovery and relaxation of the sanctions imposed on the country by the United States.

Lawyer Ruíz explains that Venezuela is experiencing a renaissance in all its economic sectors and in particular in the air transport or aviation sector, and in his opinion it is a good time to look towards Venezuela.

“There is a kind of awakening in aviation. As part of the aeronautical industry in my country in the legal field, I can say with great responsibility that it is a good time to start looking in Venezuela”, said the lawyer.

The first international airline to return to the country was the Portuguese TAP Air Portugal, with a flight from Lisbon and with 200 passengers on board, it arrived at the Maiquetía International Airport in Caracas on April 21.

While the Brazilian company Gol met on May 3 with the INAC authorities in order to carry out the “strategic plans” that allow the Brazilian company to resume its commercial activities in the country.

For its part, the Colombian Avianca also submitted a “request to the Colombian Civil Aeronautics to resume the Bogotá-Caracas route with a frequency of seven weekly flights.” With the return of this airline, one of the most popular and important routes in the region would be restored due to the proximity between both countries.
