Colonel Freddy Borges, General Director of the Maiquetía International Airport (IAIM) in Venezuela, reported that the institution will accept Petro, Bitcoin, Dash, among other cryptocurrencies, to buy air tickets and pay other services offered by the main air terminal in the Latin American country.

He explained that “a button that is for payment of cryptocurrencies will be activated in the airport platforms and commercial activities, in coordination with the National Superintendency of Cryptocurrencies and Related Activities (Sunacrip).”

According to Borges, with the incorporation of payment in cryptocurrencies, the air termination advances “towards international standards, given the progressive entry of Russian or European tourists to the country, and a boost to the digital currency that the country is seeking.”

He recalled the recent entry of Russian passengers, who came to enjoy the tourist attractions of the Margarita Island, and added that soon “they will also come to La Guaira, through Conviasa”, for which he considers it very important to incorporate “these new technological economic systems.”

Venezuela, according to data released last August by Chainalysis, ranks first in Latin America and seventh in the world in adoption of cryptocurrencies and the fact that people can cancel tickets with digital currencies will boost the development of the crypto market in the country.

Borges also highlighted that both internal and external tourism has been rebounding, within the framework of the quarantine established by the country, that is, the 7×7 scheme. During the flexible weeks, the destinations with the highest demand are: Nueva Esparta, Los Roques and Maracaibo, while Mexico and the Dominican Republic are the preferred destinations in the international market.
