Water scarcity affects human and animal life, agriculture, and all industrial activity. Hence, the need to use advanced technologies that can provide solutions to the water crisis. With the incorporation of AI, Big Data, and IoT, Mexico is advancing in efficiency and productivity. Among the achievements is a saving of up to 30 % in water use, “especially in corn, watermelon, and similar crops,” where digital innovation helps conserve resources and also boost agricultural yields.

“The urgency is clear: collaboration between sectors to digitize and ensure the sustainable future of agriculture in Mexico.”

Farmers have incorporated automated systems, among other tools, to meet current food demand, given the inefficiency of traditional systems. Other technologies help monitor weather activity in real time, benefiting farmers whose crops depend on rainfall.

Applications developed by Bayer Mexico have led to a 30% saving in water consumption, improving farm yields and increasing production.

It is estimated that nearly 15 % of Mexican agriculture “has implemented some technology to digitize its operations, with the main barriers to entry being a lack of capital, low digital literacy, and a lack of government support to make this sector more efficient.”

The projection is based on the growth, although uneven, of other sectors, such as “fishing, agriculture, mining and construction, whose progress will stand out in the last quarter of the year.”

The minister has underlined the confidence of the authorities towards the positive performance of the national economy as a whole for 2025 and noted that in 2024 business expectations changed for the better. “Before, the investment rate was negative and this 2024 it would grow 2 %.”

“For next year we think it will increase by more than 5 %, that is, about US$ 50,000 million of private investment,” he said.

However, the IMF also states that these protests are not expected to have a major impact on economic growth in the region.

IMF spokeswoman Julie Kozack said at a press conference that “there could be a more significant impact on prices if the protests continue for a prolonged period.”

Despite this, due to the fact that the agricultural sector in most European countries is “relatively small” in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), any economic impact is expected to be limited at this time.

For three weeks now, farmers from all over Spain and other European countries have come out to protest against various issues, such as the bureaucracy of the Common Agricultural Policy, environmental requirements for production and fair prices at source.

The main criticism focuses on the Green Deal, with which the European Union (EU) aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva also warned about the consequences for economies if governments give in to the protests.

While understanding the difficulties farmers face, Georgieva noted that if the protests continue and governments do not take the necessary steps to strengthen the economies, they may regret their decisions in the future.

The officials focused on the actions that the founding members of this group have been carrying out, as well as those who have been admitted this year, and their role facing 2024.

The agenda between the representatives of Russia and Iran included areas the two sides discussed such as “economy and trade, energy, agriculture, science and technology, environment, sports and culture,” according to a statement.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Diplomacy highlighted that his country is making efforts to play a leading role in the activities of the BRICS, which is “effective and constructive.”

Russia, for its part, strengthens its participation in the group, since in October 2024 it will assume the presidency, seeking to strengthen de-dollarization and the strengthening of emerging economies.

As you may remember, during the 15th BRICS Summit that took place in August in South Africa, the new countries that will be part of the group were announced: Iran, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The decision will come into effect on January 1, 2024.

Falck Renewables will build the agrovoltaic park with a power of 9.7 MW and a production of 20 GW of renewable energy in the Sicilian town of Scicli, noted for its vegetable crops in solar greenhouses. According to those responsible, the park will produce enough energy to supply electricity to some 5,000 families, avoiding the emission into the atmosphere of thousands of tons of carbon dioxide.

The agrovoltaic park will be carried out on land that has not been cultivated in the last twenty years, but now it is intended to demonstrate how activities related to the environment, energy production, agricultural activities and work are fully compatible.

The agricultural project includes the cultivation of vegetables, almonds, fruits in the open field and will be executed under the supervision of the Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment of the University of Catania, based on studies on the “compatibility of crops with the climate , the terrain and the structures of the power plant.”

According to Paolo Guarnaccia, professor at the Faculty of Agriculture of Catania, for the selection of crops “we focus on autochthonous fruits and vegetables; that is, of proven adaptability to the area” and 5 hectares of the 22 that it contemplates will be used the agrovoltaico park.

While the mayor of Scicli, Vincenzo Giannone considers that the development of the park will allow the execution of the “energy transition with international actors in Sicily”, turning the community into an “example of economic vanguard and agricultural, environmental and social sustainability”.
