The partnership, focused on expanding access to the stablecoin USD Coin (USDC), promises to drive a faster, more reliable and more affordable financial future.

In a statement issued on January 11, Coinbase expressed its enthusiasm for the new alliance, noting that it will mark the beginning of the future of money by providing millions of users with access to USDC and efficient transactions on its decentralized L2 base. Coinbase and Yellow Card products will be key to this initiative.

Yellow Card CEO Chris Maurice told Cointelegraph that the partnership involves the integration of Yellow Card payment rails in Africa. This will allow clients to access Bitcoin and USDC on Ethereum’s Layer 2 rollup, Base.

Coinbase’s products will be available across the African continent, starting with 20 countries, including Nigeria, South Africa, Botswana, Ghana, Kenya and Tanzania, according to Yellow Card’s list of operations.

Coinbase underscored the importance of this expansion, noting that many of these countries face high inflation rates and rely heavily on remittances. The partnership with Yellow Card is presented as an economically viable alternative for conducting transactions in the region.

In addition to USDC, the integration of other cryptocurrencies and stablecoins compatible with Coinbase is anticipated. African users will be able to take advantage of this offer through Coinbase Wallet, which recently implemented the ability to make transfers via links on various social media platforms, such as iMessage, Telegram, WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram.

Chris Maurice expressed confidence that this partnership will facilitate trade for many Africans across the continent, emphasizing that stablecoins, such as USDC, address real issues for people and businesses on the African continent. The partnership promises to make a significant contribution to the openness, accessibility and globalization of the financial system in Africa.

The measure, which will take effect from September 21, covers the suspension of Binance prepaid cards, including the virtual and physical versions. The company has urged users to take immediate action to manage refunds and claims before December 20, setting this date as the deadline.

Although Binance cards have been an option available in Colombia since March of this year, their reach extends beyond national borders. The cards will also stop operating in the Middle East, North Africa and other Latin American countries such as Argentina and Brazil.

It should be remembered that these cards, issued in collaboration with Movii, gave Binance users in Colombia the ability to use cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin and BNB to make purchases and pay bills. The product had been introduced in Argentina in July of the previous year and in Brazil in January of the same year, making Colombia the third country in the region to have this service.

Chris Maurice, founder and CEO of Yellow Card, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in Africa, claimed that cryptocurrencies are addressing real issues related to banking and foreign exchange on the continent, unlike how it can be perceived as a casino in the West. . The most common use cases in Africa include international payments, sending money to friends and family, and inflation protection.

Kevin Imani, founder and CEO of Sankore 2.0, a Near Protocol affiliate, noted that blockchain-based payments can act as a human rights technology by providing protection for people in underdeveloped nations. In developing countries, where hyperinflationary pressures and corruption have left citizens with few options, cryptocurrencies offer an escape route by providing greater financial inclusion and control over their money.

According to Statistica, inflation rates in sub-Saharan Africa reached an estimated 14.5 % in 2022, the region’s highest annual change since the 2008 recession. This backdrop makes peer-to-peer crypto transactions an obvious choice for many Africans. , as they can counter weak national currencies and corruption, as well as increase financial inclusion.

Africans see the cryptocurrency sector as an opportunity to be part of something big and ride a new wave of development, similar to the Internet revolution in the 2000s. The inherent transparency of blockchain technology inspires confidence in a continent where Bad governance and a lack of accountability are common, according to Okoye Kevin Chibuoyim, founder and CEO of Nigeria-based cryptocurrency education platform GIDA.

In terms of adoption, Nigerians lead the region, with 47 % of them owning or transacting daily with cryptocurrencies, according to a local report from May. Although Botswana is considered the country with the most legal and regulatory clarity regarding cryptocurrencies, it is reported that cryptocurrencies are illegal in Cameroon, Gabon, Guyana, Lesotho, Libya, the Central African Republic and Zimbabwe, according to Investopedia.

The growing popularity of cryptocurrencies in Africa is reflected in the increase in the number of users by 2,500 % in 2021, as well as a significant increase in VC funding in the region, which experienced an 11-fold explosion in 2022.

In an interview, Malpass assured that the terms and conditions of these credits must be “more transparent”, amid reports that countries like Ghana and Zambia are having problems repaying the borrowed money.

Many countries with fragile developing economies accept loans from other nations or from international organizations, but rising interest rates in the past year mean many of them are having trouble repaying them.

For Malpass, it is especially difficult to find that extra money in an economy whose currency is constantly devaluing, which causes a “double whammy, and means that (economic) growth is going to be slower.”

“What I especially recommend is that they be transparent in the contracts. That has been one of the problems, if you draw up a contract and it says but don’t show it to anyone else, that’s a negative point, you have to get away from that,” he added.

In the case of Chinese loans, he said African governments are “offering collateral as incentives to get credit,” something they shouldn’t do because it “locks (the issue) in for generations.”

These financing problems, Malpass points out, are not exclusive to the Asian giant: “If you look at the history of Western loans, sometimes it is not for the benefit of people in other countries. Even IMF credits have not always been the best thing that could be done for a country”.

As reported in a statement by the European Executive, within the framework of an adjustment of the humanitarian items of the European Union last year, the countries benefiting from additional funds will be Sudan, with 10 million; countries in Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean region, with 5.5 million; Central African Republic, with 4 million; and Algeria, Cameroon and Chad, with two million euros each.

The supplementary funds will be used to strengthen social protection programs in terms of food aid, nutrition, access to water, sanitation and hygiene. The items will also be used to support recently displaced populations and host communities.

The Crisis Management Commissioner, Janez Lenarcic, has insisted that the EU will continue to show solidarity with the African continent to weather the global consequences of the Russian military invasion, in addition to the situation of internally displaced persons due to conflict in Africa.

“In several African countries, millions of people face food insecurity and are on the brink of starvation. In other parts of the continent, the effects of the food crisis are compounded by the deteriorating security situation and increased violence, which causes internal displacement and loss of livelihoods”, Lenarcic explained, pointing to the situation in Sudan.

Likewise, the Slovenian commissioner pointed out that the increasingly recurring extreme weather events in countries like Cameroon are causing new waves of internally displaced persons on the continent.

The governor of this institution, Abdellatif Jouahiri, announced that there are a series of discussions with market participants, regulatory bodies, the Moroccan Capital Markets Authority (AMMC), the Insurance and Social Security Supervisory Authority (ACAPS), among others. .

The project will offer a definition of cryptocurrency “adapted to the Moroccan context” and will aim to protect people without limiting innovation. Although the details of the bill have not been revealed, it could hardly be more restrictive than current legislation, which outright prohibits the trading of cryptocurrencies.

It should be noted that last year, Morocco became the African country with the fastest growth in the cryptocurrency market, going from 2.4% of the population borrowing digital assets in 2021 to 3.1% a year later.

Mainly, university students from the southeast of Nigeria have been the ones who have shown the most interest in this sector.

To add value to this process, Binance will hold the Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Awareness Tour (BCAT) in June. Specifically, it is planned that the event will take place on the 4th of this month.

Despite being the world’s smallest crypto economy in terms of market penetration, Africa is embracing digital assets at a faster rate as locals seek alternatives to weak financial infrastructure and a lack of payment ramps.

The Binance event also aims to fill the expectations of a common space for conversation about cryptocurrencies, especially in a place where central banks have restricted the use of digital assets.
