It is used in the business environment but more so in the personal one. Many people develop a dependence on online approval, or dependence on this acceptance. Which could be a sign of low self-esteem.

Personal insecurity is the engine that normally leads those who are part of social networks to seek the approval of their contacts. This happens in purely interactive networks such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, where approval of the shared content is always expected.

Nottingham Trent University conducted a study where it determined that “people with low self-esteem are more likely to spend more time on social networks, actively seeking the approval of others through these mechanisms.”

The impact that these people experience on their personal perception causes negative judgments not only of themselves but of their capabilities. “As a result, they depend more on the opinion of others to feel valued. Social networks, with their structure based on immediate feedback, provide a constant supply of external validation, which can be addictive for those who lack self-confidence.”

People with low self-esteem are always making comparisons with others in terms of achievements, physical beauty or wealth, and this causes anxiety, stress, depression, as demonstrated by a study by the University of Pennsylvania.

Excessive use of networks, as a consequence of the search for validation, leads people to greater exposure on these platforms, as they are always looking to fit into a profile. In this regard, it is useful to mention a study by the Royal Society for Public Health in the United Kingdom, where “70 % of young people between 14 and 24 years old claim that social networks negatively affect their self-esteem.”

To end this dependence on external acceptance, particularly on social media and similar platforms, campaigns are required to promote healthy self-esteem and self-acceptance, as well as to educate about the dangers of social media addiction.

Spending too many hours surfing the Internet or checking social networks can become a health problem.

Some consequences of technology addiction may be involuntary isolation from the family and social environment, neglect of food and personal hygiene, abandonment of school or professional obligations.

Among the recommendations for all ages, if you suspect a technology addiction, we can list:

Set a certain number of hours for computer use. In the case of children, this includes cell phones or tablets and video game consoles.

Promote outdoor activities, with family or friends, every day of the week or at least three to four times a week.

Promote educational games that are not digital, such as board games, cards, riddles, role-playing games, among others.

Promote sport among children and young people as an activity that enhances socialization, healthy competition and physical health.

Promote communication in the family at all times.

The network, owned by Meta, published a statement where it talks about the approach of its latest report, in which the “problematic uses” of its use were studied, in order to reprimand The Wall Street Journal for an article published in the accusing the company of promoting Internet addiction.

According to this publication and based on the conclusions obtained by the social network founded by Mark Zuckerberg, one in eight registered users on Facebook assures that the compulsive use of social networks affects their sleep, their work or their social relationships.

“We have been studying well-being for more than a decade and we continue to do so. The suggestion that this work concluded in 2019 could not be further from the truth. This is demonstrated by the various investigations that we have published externally since then and our greatest commitment,” the company said in a statement.

On the other hand, they took the opportunity to accuse the media of “selectively choosing internal company documents to present a story that is simply wrong about how we use the investigation to address an important issue.”
