The National Institute of Statistics and Census (INDEC) reflects a downward trend in prices in the South American country, thanks in part to “the reduction in food costs, which registered a 0.5 % decrease, driven by the sharp drop in vegetables (-8 %) and fruits (-2 %).”

In detail, the sectors that experienced the greatest price increases in May were Communications (4.1 %), due to increases in telephone and internet services. Next came restaurants and hotels, with a 3 % increase, driven by increases in eating out.

Meanwhile, transportation and food and non-alcoholic beverages saw the smallest variation, “with increases of 0.4 % and 0.5 %, respectively.”

The goods and services sectors, in the core CPI (2.2 %), led the price increases; followed by regulated prices (1.3 %) and seasonal prices (-2.7 %).

According to the local entity’s report, the increase in prices during the month of August had a substantial rebound that has affected the inflation index.

The data published by the BCV indicate that the sectors with the greatest increase in September 2023 are “education, with an increase of 18.1 %; followed by transportation, with 11.1 %; clothing and footwear, with 10.1 %; and communications, with an increase of 9.8 %.”

Likewise, other items that also showed price increases are food and non-alcoholic beverages, with an average increase of 7.9 % in September, followed by the health sector, where prices reflected an increase of 8.8 %.

Estimates from the Venezuelan Observatory of Finance (OVF), “the estimated monthly inflation for September 2023 was 6 % and the annualized inflation was 396 %.”

The first is directly related “to the 5.5 % increase in the price of the dollar, which reinforces the close link between exchange rate and price movements,” as explained by the OVF.

All this in a bimonetary scenario, where transactions in bolivars, the depreciated national currency, and dollars coexist. The US currency serves as a reference in the price and value market.

The official data from the country’s regulatory body lead us to admit the critical reality that the population lives, especially in the sectors with less purchasing power.

According to information from the BCV, “the greatest price increase occurred in the communications sector, followed by health and education.”

In this sense, according to the data provided by the Central Bank, the communications sector rose 13.1 %), followed by the health sector with an increase of 7.5 % and education, with 6.5 %.

Taking these data into account, Reuters calculations conclude that “year-on-year inflation stood at 429.2 %, the highest in the region.”

In detail, the average increase for the goods and services sector in April “was 3.8 %, on March 6.1%, on February 19.3 % and in January 42.1%, which is the highest monthly inflation registered in Venezuela in the last two years”.

For the month of May, according to experts from the Finance Observatory (OVF), the closing stood at 7.6 %, with an accumulated variation of the first five months of the year of 84.9 %.

The coordinator of the Observatory, Alfonso Marquina, has pointed out that the monthly inflation rate for May is the second lowest so far this year, due to the record of a lower growth rate of liquidity (26 %) compared to the month of February and the devaluation of the exchange rate by 1 %.

Prices in the services sector increased by 26.3 %, the highest rise among all categories, due to the progressive adjustment of rates in this type of activity. The group of food and non-alcoholic beverages posted an increase of 22.5 %, while communication services grew 21.8 %.

During the month of May there was evidence of the deepening of the decrease in purchasing power, mainly of the most disadvantaged sectors. On the other hand, the value of the food basket for a family of five has reached a historical maximum of 296.54 dollars, equivalent to almost 900 million bolivars. It represents a growth of 41 % since November 2020 and 18 % since January of this year, so Venezuelans need 132 minimum wages to be able to access the food basket.
