The wait for Sweden’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization ended this Monday with its official admission.

In a ceremony held this Monday, March 11 at NATO headquarters, the Swedish flag was raised as an indication of its integration into the organization. With this, Sweden becomes the 32nd member state.

The secretary general of the military alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, was present at the ceremony, who carried out the flag raising together with the Swedish Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson. Stoltenberg indicated that “Sweden’s accession to NATO makes the transatlantic military alliance bigger and stronger.”

He referred to Ukraine, a country that also requested membership in NATO, adding that it is closer to achieving this goal. Regarding Russia, he noted that Vladimir Putin failed in his attempts to weaken the organization.

Sweden, now an official member of NATO, has been a long-standing partner, “under the protective shield of Article 5” of the mutual defense treaty, Stoltenberg said, adding that this article is “the maximum guarantee of freedom and security. All for one and one for all.”

The Swedish Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, emphasized that NATO countries, now with Sweden, will share the “burdens, responsibilities and risks” in the face of war threats.

In a joint statement, the member countries published their decision, recognizing the extraordinary “potential for the expansion of international trade and investment rules in the 21st century beyond the Asia-Pacific region.”

The United Kingdom is an important commercial partner of Japan, so its incorporation into the group, in Nishimura’s opinion, would be of great importance for a “free and fair economic order.” For her part, Liz Truss, head of British International Trade, expressed his satisfaction with the “excellent news.”

Economic recovery

The Japanese minister has indicated that the world economy is paralyzed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, for which the CPTPP could play a fundamental role in the recovery and strengthening of the global economy, since it represents 13.4 % of the World GDP.

The United Kingdom has registered a trade surplus with the countries that make up the association in the first quarter of the year. Other nations such as South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and China have also expressed their interest in being part of this free trade area.
