In an announcement made by US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth in Panama on Wednesday, August 12, it was revealed that Colombia has authorized joint military actions with the United States in the fight against drug trafficking.

“The announcement of this cooperation marked the formal entry of the new government of the far-right Abelardo de la Espriella into the Shield of the Americas, an anti-drug coalition comprised of some twenty countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, led by US President Donald Trump.”

Hegseth stated: “Through the newly inaugurated president, Colombia has already requested that the Department of Defense join Colombia in its fight against narcoterrorism, authorizing joint military operations.”

The new president of Colombia maintains that he will continue the fight against narcoterrorism, ruling out any peace negotiations with the “armed groups that have plunged the South American country into its worst crisis of violence in the last decade.”

Regarding Washington, the Trump Administration is expected to allocate $1 billion to invest in security in Colombia.

“The agreement to join the Shield of the Americas was formalized on Wednesday, during an event in Panama, by Secretary Hegseth and Defense Minister Jorge Mora, who signed a memorandum of understanding for Colombia’s accession, accompanied by Republican Senator Bernie Moreno.”

Colombia held presidential elections this Sunday, May 31. During the process, Abelardo de la Espriella and Iván Cepeda obtained the majority of votes to advance to the runoff, which will be held on June 21.

Abelardo de la Espriella: 10,361,499 votes – 43.74 %

Iván Cepeda: 9,688,361 votes – 40.90 %

Paloma Valencia: 1,639,685 votes – 6.92 %

Sergio Fajardo: 1,009,073 votes – 4.26 %
