Competition regulators in the UK have targeted Google for concentrating the largest percentage of searches. On Friday, October 10, a landmark ruling was issued designating Google as a company with a strategic position in the search market.

According to Will Hayter, Executive Director of Digital Markets at the Competition and Markets Authority, the company “holds a strategic position in the search and search advertising sector, with over 90 % of searches in the UK conducted on its platform.”

The CMA has the power to intervene and ensure that Google’s search services are “open to effective competition.” Although the ruling does not lead to immediate changes, the regulator can impose fines for non-compliance and has direct enforcement powers.

Since June, potential changes it could require from Google have been outlined, “such as fairer search rankings, easier access to alternative search engines for consumers, and greater control by publishers over how their content is used in AI-generated responses. It is expected to consult on any planned intervention later this year.”
