The Soviet probe Cosmos 482, which was launched into space to study the planet Venus in 1972, will return to Earth on an estimated date of May 13.

According to NASA, its entry into Earth’s atmosphere will be uncontrolled, and it is expected to survive this process.

As you may recall, the former Soviet Union launched the probe into orbit in 1972 bound for Venus, but “it never left Earth orbit.” More than half a century later, Cosmos 482 will return to the planet despite uncertain factors that could affect “a long, shallow reentry trajectory.”

No one can guarantee that, although it was designed for a denser atmosphere, with a protective shell of semiglobular titanium, it won’t break up or disintegrate extensively as it passes through Earth’s.
