Putin made the announcement at the conclusion of a ceremony marking the Fatherland’s Heroes’ Day, saying: “I understand that now I can’t do anything else. I will present my candidacy in the elections for President of the Russian Federation.”

It is important to clarify that the law initially establishes that a president can serve only two successive terms of four years each. If Putin won the 2024 presidential election, he would be the president with the longest tenure in power, and would remain at the head of the nation until 2030 given that in 2008 a constitutional amendment was made to extend the presidential term to six. years.
