The United States National Security Department announced the 18-month extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately 600,000 Venezuelans in the country.

According to the statement on the agency’s website, eligible beneficiaries will be able to retain TPS “and employment authorization, if they re-register and continue to meet the eligibility requirements for said status.”

The extension of this permit begins on April 3, 2025, and ends on October 2, 2026, for Venezuelans who have “continuously resided in the United States since July 31, 2023, or before. Venezuelan citizens who arrived in the United States after July 31, 2023, are not eligible for TPS.”

The National Security Department has made it clear that citizens who arrive in the United States following a legal process will be subject to compliance. It also clarified that Venezuelans who registered for TPS under the designation “Venezuela TPS 2021” are equally eligible to re-register under this extension, given that they meet the same requirements.

The United States Department of Homeland Security announced a new 18-month extension of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) enjoyed by Venezuelan migrants on US soil.

The measure applies to all those people who have arrived in the United States before July 31, which currently covers more than 242,000 Venezuelans. However, North American authorities estimate the potential beneficiaries at around 472,000.

“The status provides individuals, who are already in the United States, protection against expulsion if conditions in their country of origin prevent a safe return,” explained the Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, in a statement.

In this sense, Mayorlas warned that Venezuelans must also “understand” that “those who arrived after July 31, 2023, do not have the right to protection,” which implies that “they will be expelled if they do not have a legal justification to stay on US territory”.
