Etihad airline of the Arab Emirates will use blockchain

By using blockchain technology, the company can reduce the costs of tickets and other tourist services, bypassing intermediaries

The national airline of the United Arab Emirates, which operates routes to the Middle East, Europe, Asia, Australia and America, has partnered with the open source travel platform Winding Tree to explore the use of blockchain technology in its products and services.

Tristan Thomas, director of innovation at Etihad, says that the idea is that technology is “an opportunity for us to change a market traditionally dominated by the main distribution systems”.

Currently, global distribution systems (GDS) such as Amadeus and Saber use real-time inventory technology to collect data on flights and rooms for travel agents or corporate travel reservationers.

In the same order of ideas, the Winding Tree platform will allow corporations and institutions such as airlines and hotels to publish the inventory available to customers directly, without the need for GDS.

For his part, Pedro Anderson, director of operations at Winding Tree, argues that the platform is not aimed at retail consumers, however, “the fact that broker fees are ultimately omitted means lower costs.”
