Embassy of Canada suspends operations in Venezuela

The Canadian government reported that all Venezuelan consular procedures will be carried out at the headquarters of Bogotá, Colombia

Through an official statement, the government of Canada announced that they will temporarily suspend the operations of its embassy in Venezuela.

The reason for this measure is the “impossibility of keeping its diplomatic personnel in adequate legal and logistical conditions in the country.”

“Unfortunately, by the end of this month, Canadian diplomats in Venezuela will no longer be able to obtain diplomatic accreditation under the Nicolás Maduro regime and their visas will expire,” the Canadian government said in the statement.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau acknowledged months ago the president of the National Assembly, Juan Guaidó, as president in charge of the country. He has also been an open participant in initiatives, such as the Lima Group, which seeks to restore the democratic system in Venezuela.

From now on, the Canadian embassy in Bogotá (Colombia) will be responsible for carrying out the consular functions for Venezuelans.

“As Venezuela gets deeper into the dictatorship and Venezuelans continue to suffer at the hands of the illegitimate regime of Maduro, the regime has taken measures to limit the ability of foreign embassies to operate in Venezuela, particularly those that advocate restoration of democracy in Venezuela,” the Trudeau government statement said.
