Double-decker planes as an alternative for social distancing

The design of these spaces will allow travelers to maintain preventive measures against the Covid-19 pandemic and other threats to their health

Airlines and companies linked to the aeronautical industry have been working on new aircraft designs to provide greater comfort and offer lower-cost services to travelers.

The Covid-19 pandemic has served as an accelerator in times of not only health but economic crisis, allowing the design of double-decker aircraft where the customer has the possibility of maintaining hygiene measures and stretching or lying down even if traveling in economy class.

San Francisco-based Zephyr Aerospace is a pioneer in this initiative. “It has designed a type of seats for long-distance flights with a new configuration, which not only allows to maintain the distance, but also makes it possible to stretch in economy class.”

The new Zephyr Seat design, arranged on two floors, occupies a row, one above the other in the style of bunk beds. To access the upper part, the traveler has a removable ladder that can be stored once he is in his seat.

The seats of this company “will have a space for the feet, a personal space, and multiple sleeping positions, offering comfort and privacy with minimal interaction with the rest of the passengers,” the company reported to the media.

With this innovative option, airlines will not only be able to comply with social distancing and hygiene measures but will also be able to sustain the number of passengers per flight without economic losses once commercial operations are reactivated.
