Digital Health and Computational Biology: create new large laboratory in Israel

Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Merck, Teva, Biotech and Amazon add their capabilities and initiative for this project that includes multiple facets of Artificial Intelligence

The Israel Innovation Authority and the Israeli National Digital Ministry announced this Sunday, December 27, that the pharmaceutical companies Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Merck and Teva; Israel’s Biotech Fund and Amazon Web Services will team up to create a laboratory in the country for Digital Health and Computational Biology.

The Innovation Lab will be located in the Rehovot Science Park, will start operating in 2021 and has a budget of eight million euros for the next five years, which will be completed with contributions from the partner companies themselves.

The companies will establish a computer lab that will aim to support entrepreneurs and start-ups in their first steps with projects aimed at the health industry.

The companies that join the “Lab” will receive funding from the Innovation Authority and the National Digital Ministry, which will allow them to advance their operations.

“The rapid development of vaccines for the Covid-19 virus owes its success in part to the Artificial Intelligence capabilities of leading pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer and Moderna. These areas are expected to be more significant in the coming years”, explained the Innovation Authority in a statement.

“The purpose of the laboratory is to assist in the establishment and advancement of start-ups that develop innovative computational technologies based on Artificial Intelligence and aimed at discovering personalized treatments and solutions. It will also help start-ups with the assistance of laboratory partners and the access they give their scientific knowledge to world experts to develop revolutionary medicines and treatments, ”the note added.
