Data on USB flash drives can disappear over time

Even if a USB flash drive is of excellent quality, the permanence of the data stored there could disappear or become unreadable in a period of more than 10 years

Data storage is one of the tasks that people and companies perform daily around the world. The speed and convenience of USB flash drives make this work easier. But is it possible for this information to disappear over time?

The durability of a good quality USB flash drive is estimated at 10 years. As long as it is used intelligently and carefully. This means storing it in a place at the right temperature, protecting it with its cover, applying an antivirus and write protection, among others.

Even with all precautionary measures, data on a USB flash drive could disappear, corrupt or become unreadable over time due to electromagnetic damage, for example.

Other ways to damage a flash drive and, consequently, lose data, could be exposing it to moisture, forcing it when connecting it to the computer, manipulating or touching the contact points, dropping it repeatedly, disconnecting it incorrectly, turning off the computer while transferring data.

Avoiding these situations helps to extend the life of the USB flash drive. However, with respect to data preservation, specialists always recommend making backup copies, either in the cloud, external hard drives or optical media such as a DVD or Blu-ray.
