Cybercriminals use old malware to improve attacks

A former agent of the National Security Agency of the United States said that hackers make more effective attacks using this technology

Cybercriminals who choose to steal and reuse Mac’s old malware designed by government-funded organizations can launch more effective attacks, said Patrick Wardle, computer ex hacker for the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA).

In the framework of the security conference at RSA Security, held in San Francisco (United States) last weekend, Wardle explained that reusing old malware on systems such as MacOS can be a smarter approach and that it requires less resources to successfully develop malicious code.

The former hacker and now a security researcher for MacOS and iOS at the security company Jamf showed attendees the effectiveness of this technique with four malware attacks used in recent years.

“There are many groups of hackers that have incredible funding, resources and motivation that work to create a very powerful malwarequestion  that has all the tools and has already been fully tested,” says Wardle.

“The question is: What if we let these groups in these agencies to create malware, and if you are a hacker, simply reuse it for your own mission?”, he added.
