Cyber attacks on video games grew 50%

A study by the security firm Kaspersky determined that between January and April there was a growth of 54%, mainly in Minecraft

Cyber attacks related to video games increased more than 50% in April compared to the beginning of this year, coinciding with the confinement measures imposed to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and Minecraft being the title most used by cybercriminals.

The fact that people could only leave their homes to carry out basic activities made the consumption of video games increase significantly during confinement.

According to data offered by researchers from the cybersecurity company Kaspersky, in April there was an increase of 54%, with respect to the data from January, in the daily number of attempts to direct users to fraudulent web pages that have video games as their theme.

Cyber criminals lured users with promises like free versions of games, updates, cheats, or extensions, to enter certain links to download a variety of malicious programs.

These malicious programs range from malware to steal passwords, to ransomware or miners, a software that takes advantage of mining cryptocurrencies on the computer of the victim.

Kaspersky said that Minecraft, one of the most popular video games, has been the title most used by cybercriminals in more than 130,000 attacks.
