Crypto miner condemned for misuse of electric power

A man was sentenced to 3 and a half years in prison for stealing electric power from a railway station to mine bitcoins

At present, cryptocurrencies live a boom. That is why Bitcoin mining has become so popular and authorities are increasingly aware of the actions taken by citizens in regard to the use of electric power. A Chinese newspaper reports that a citizen was convicted of stealing energy from a railway station for his mining activities.

The sentence was handed down by a railway transport court in the Chinese province of Shanxi. In addition to the prison sentence, the man, named Xu Xinghua, must pay a fine of 100,000 yuan, equivalent to $ 14,500.

The man stole power from a factory called Kouquan Railway, according to the report, during the last two months of last year with the sole purpose of providing power to its 50 Bitcoin mining devices and its three fans.

According to the Chinese journal The Paper, the citizen mined approximately 3.2 BTC, which is equivalent to $ 17,400. It generated a consumption in the electricity bill of 104,000 yuan or 15,000 dollars.

Despite this situation, China remains a leader in this sector due to its low cost hardware and cheap electric power. The government asserts that arrests have been applied for theft of electricity, but not for mining.
