Costa Rica economic activity suffers a slowdown

The Monthly Index of Economic Activity (IMAE) showed a growth of 1.9%, much lower than that shown in the previous year

This week the Monthly Index of Economic Activity (IMAE) was published, which grew 1.9% year-on-year for November 2018.

This figure confirms the deceleration trend of economic activity in Costa Rica, according to an official source.

The report of the Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR) indicates that this figure is much lower than that presented in November 2017, when it stood at 3.1%.

“Compared to November 2017, the majority of economic activities moderated their growth, which was reflected in the slowdown in the general indicator,” the Central Bank report states.

The factors of this slowdown, explained the entity, is due to “deterioration in consumer confidence, a persistence of protest movements of some unions in opposition to the tax reform and problems in trade flows with Central America given the sociopolitical situation of Nicaragua”.

According to the Bank, the fall of 0.3 % in the commerce sector is due to “the uncertainty of consumers before the possible increase in interest and exchange rates.”
