Colombia will finance renewable energy projects

Colombia approved on Tuesday the signing of eight contracts in the area of ​​renewable energy for an amount of 2,200 million dollars in order to reach a total installed capacity of 1,298 megawatts.

Through the announcement made by the Colombian Ministry of Mines and Energy, it was learned that the government will support companies that allow diversifying the national electricity matrix.

In the negotiation, “seven unidentified generators obtained five contracts for wind projects and three for solar energy,” according to the statement. The names of those companies involved cannot be disclosed until the auction ends. On the other hand, the agency emphasized that there will be 22 companies responsible for marketing the electricity generated by the projects.

The Minister of Mines and Energy, María Fernanda Suárez, said: “This is the beginning of a revolution because it allows us to diversify our electricity matrix. In this way, we will have an increasingly clean, resilient and environmentally responsible matrix.”

Currently, 70% of the energy consumed by Colombia comes from hydroelectric generation. With the award of contracts for renewable energy projects, the government seeks to reach 1,298 megawatts, which involves the “generation of solar, wind and biomass power of 2,200 megawatts by 2022“.
