Chile will apply taxes to digital platforms

Chilean finance authorities indicated that all platforms should pay VAT, income tax and import duty

Chilean Finance Minister Felipe Larraín Bascuñán announced that they will tax all digital platforms to maintain equity. The announcement was made after the recent visit to the country by the Amazon Web Services vice president.

The measure is part of the tax modernization that the country intends to apply. Larraín highlighted the lack of balance detected between the different digital platforms that pay taxes and those that do not.

For this reason, they have decided that all of them cancel fees for Value Added Tax (VAT), Income Tax, as well as the import tariff in cases where there is no free trade agreement with Chile.

The minister specifically referred to the companies Uber, Airbnb, Netflix and Spotify, as well as the digital commerce of Amazon and Aliexpress, on which the taxes to be settled will be established according to the recently adopted measure.

Regarding funds collection through taxes, Larraín said that when applied in a balanced way the amount could reach several million dollars. This would no doubt benefit the Chilean economy in general.
